Title: Benjamin Marauder .22 recommended hunting and target scope?
Post by: yelvero on November 24, 2010, 01:20:51 PM
Need help in deciding what scope to mount on my .22 Marauder to best satisfy small game hunting (back yard pest mainly) and distant target shooting.

Wally World Centerpoint 4-16x40 AO.  Surprisingly good optics, reasonable size and weight, decent controls, all for around $70.  If you want smaller and lighter and don't need AO, the Centerpoint 3-9x32 is another excellent choice, Walmart has them with fixed 50 yard parallax, don't know if the 35 yard version is still available.  I have two of the 35 yard models, one on my Diana 34, the other on my 54.

I won't recommend Leapers, even though they're supposed to come out of the same factory as the Centerpoints, I don't think they're as good, I think Crosman does a better job of QC.  Lots of folks like the Hawke scopes, I don't think they're really any better optically than the CP's, and they cost a lot more.  If you have a larger budget, you might look at some of the Bushnells, since you don't have to worry about recoil, you have lots of choices.  From there, it's whatever your wallet can handle :-).  Later.

I have Centerpoints on most of my rifles, they do the Job  ;) I prefer the Adventure class 3-9x40 to the 4-16, and it's a bit cheaper too ;D

I purchased two CenterPoint 4-16X 40mm AO scopes recently.

They both suffer from inaccurate AO calibration, too much play in the AO ring (reason for the inaccuracy), and last but not least, the illuminated reticle dial is so stiff on both, you can't feel the stop detents.

My first CenterPoint scope I purchased 3 or 4 years ago suffers none of the above problems (same model).

The illum. ret. dials haven't loosened-up with use; if anything, they have tightened more.

After this last batch of CP scopes from China, appeared in WallyWorld, the QC is just not there.

YMMV

Hi Yelvero, Welcome to the GTA.  I'm going to go against the general concensus here and recommend a different brand of scope. The leapers and centerpoints are fine scopes, but because they are both heavy duty built(steel tube) and heavy built for spring type airguns, they are heavy and long imo. The marauder doesn't require a springer proof scope, so anything can go on it. For the money, i found a fantastic deal on Simmons 4x12x50 AO scopes at natchez shooter supply. These are both short and light(very) and have great glass that ppulls in lots of low level light. Everything about this scope seems quality and best of all, after rebates it's $45.00. Heres a link to a short reveiw i did of it, hope this helps,  J

Thanks everyone for the welcome!  Also, thanks for the good info.
I was also thinking about getting a side wheel scope... any suggestions?

This is but one example, but it's smaller than most, the price sure looks nice, and it's a Leapers, which is widely respected.
