Hello everyone, I went down to the riverbed today with a friend and his son and did some plinking. We jumped a cotton tail on the walk to the range so it looks like opening day for cotton tails is gonna be good here. We took the American pumper lineup today which is to say my 1979 Benjamin 347 and my Crosman 1377 in .22 with Crosman Steel Breech Kit and Discovery bolt.
My ole Benji shoots RWS Super Mags at 680fps with it's current configuration while my 1377-22 shoots CPHP at 470fps. We started at 10 yards and worked our way to 20 and then took a few shots from 30 before we had to go.
It was a lot of fun to shoot with a youngster and pass on a few pointers. It's always fun to watch a youngster get excited about hitting the spinner.
Here is a pic of the 1979 Benji.

So after shooting down in the river I decided I needed to zero the scope again at my home 10 yard range.
I decided that I would go back to shooting silver stings as she always seemed to like them and spits them a lot faster than she does the RWS Supermags. Besides that I want to do some 40 yard plinking with her next time I go to the riverbed so I decided to stray away from the wadcutters and stick with pointed or domed.
The reason I have relatively low velocity with this old girl is due to the fact that I recently replaced the intake, exhaust and valve spring as well as the pump cup. Ever since the service she has been unable to dump any more than 8 pumps.... So, I need to get a stiffer hammer spring to try and see if I can get her to dump 10-12 pumps. Oh yeah and I recrowned the barrel ten years ago, hehe.
After zeroing the scope at ten yards I took a five shot string to see how well she was grouping. I was pleased with the results.

Nice group and 347... Have you tried the RWS Superpoints? How do those silver stings perform at longer distances in your 347?
-
Hi Mav, I do indeed have some super points and they perform very well in this rifle. The silver stings and the super points both do well in the rifle as they both seem to have a tight fit at the skirt. This 347 likes a big skirt for better accuracy and velocity.
I actually need to find a good and heavy long range pellet for this 347 something in the 9-11gn range would be perfect. I used to use silver arrows for my heavy pellet but that was a 500 tin of silver arrows from more than ten years ago. When I bought a new tin and went to shoot them they were all over the place and much lower velocity. Turns out the skirts of the newer silver arrows were much smaller than the older ones. Since then I have been trying to shoot through my remaining beeman pellet stock and drop them from my lineup.
When I head out to the riverbed next I will be sure to punch some paper with both at 20 and 30.

That's a hard one... The pellets that I've seen that have similar skirts to the RWSs, aren't sold in the US... Have you tried the the Beeman Kodiaks or the H&N Baracudas...? They're the closest that I've seen with skirts like that...

Looking at the BC for both those pellets they seems like they would be contenders provided they fit right at the skirt. Ill pick up a tin as well as some CPH and see how they do, thanks.

Ok so I shot the sliver arrows again just for drill, what I found was a surprise. While the velocity was much lower with the arrows they gave me a startling 5 shot group at 10 yards.
now when the crazy wind dies down I can go check them out at the 20 & 30 yard riverbed range.

Nice! Glad it's working out for you...
Saw your other post about about your rabbit hunt.. Impressive!

VERY nice!! Personally when hunting with them, I prefer a heavier pellet. Sure you will have more pellet drop at extended ranges. But within realistic limitations its not a big deal. BUT the performance on game will be enhanced!!

so awesome!
I have a '79 Benjamin 347 myself, and I just love it!
I'm brand new to air guns, I haven't really shot any guns since I was a Boy Scout 30 years ago, but with that riffle I can hit a 1' target at 50 yards. great air gun.
