Title: Withdrawals... what to do?
Post by: drewciferpike on May 30, 2013, 12:36:39 AM
Help me.

It has been WEEKS since I've been able to shoot. We're getting our house ready to rent, and working on the new house, so I haven't had any time to do any shooting--let alone sift through this forum for any length of time. It's horrible. I seriously doubt I'll get a chance to shoot until July. No kidding.

What do all of you do to keep the AG withdrawal symptoms down to a level not noticeable by the general public?

(The worst part? I have a new gun that I haven't been able to test, which needs a review posted ASAP!)

Prozac?  I usually take my Ag with on the tractor and do two things at the same time.  Just my two ideas

I hear ya brother!

I recently started a new job and it's been a handful the past couple months. Haven't had much time to shoot or browse the GTA.

You may need to get a low powered quite rifle if not your 790 and find a small space to shoot before bed time.  LOL

"Honey? What was that sound?"
"Um... just, uh... using the bathroom..."
"That sounds like really bad gas... are you sure you're OK?"

Sometime you just have to admit you have addiction and tell your wife you need help.  She may understand.  Then again maybe not. LOL

I've been in similar situations before.  I usually resort to reading anything airgun-related I can get my hands on, and when that no longer works, I have to pull the IZH 46 out and pop off a few rounds, even if it's only at 5m indoors.  If I can't do that, I'll take it apart and clean it.  Man, I'm sorry you're going through that.  It really not worthy.

Tell me about it. At the Fun Shoot I was able to sling about 20 or so rounds. But had to take vacation and drive 9 hours to just get some trigger time. LOL
Last weekend I was able to put a few rounds down range with my grandson. Other than that, I've had NO time to shoot. And don't see a break till the 4th of July. I plan on catching up then!!!

I am lucky I just grab a cup of coffee and sit on my back porch and shoot between shakes (too much coffee).

Darren, this is getting into Sophie's Choice-style decision-making time!
- Do I let my rifle go run free and get the shooting it deserves?
- Or do I keep it chained in the box, waiting for its chance to be tested and reviewed by me?

The selfish part of me has been sticking with the latter. Haha.

Regarding July 4th, I hear ya, Dave. Once I get any "free" time (read: I tell my wife that if I don't get a chance to shoot, I'll go insane... and the house is moved, so it's OK that the pictures aren't up on the walls, yet, etc...), I'll be shooting non-stop.

(Before I forget: Darren, if you're willing to make the drive (about 45" N of Sacramento), I'm also going to look into setting up a night-hunt for rats at my dad's company's various warehouse locations. At a minimum, you, Niko, Mark, and George are invited. If the company owners warm to the idea, I want to open it to others that want to make the drive. This won't be until harvest, so we've got time to plan...)

I'm another of the lucky ones. I work from home and have a couple acres to play on in the middle of nowhere. Seriously though, it's sometimes a matter of making time. Like anything else, working out, spending time with the kids, taking the wife out, you just have to make the time. We all tend to get so caught up in everything else in RL, that we often forget we are not living to work, but working to live, and when you stop just enjoying life, you are headed into dangerous ground.

"Take 2 pellets and call the Dr. in the morning"......

Seriously, ever thought of getting a cheap pistol and a silent trap and shooting indoors? You could shoot in a hallway, extra room, basement or garage. Might require a little ingenuity on your part to set up a range and of course get the other half's approval. That way you could shoot when the time or opportunity availed.

Exactly!  Something like a Crosman 1377 (under $60 new) and a simple trap (cardboard box with a phone book inside - free!) and you're in business.  The 1377 is a variable power pistol, quiet and accurate.  You can pop off a few rounds in a 10 minute break from the chores, and then go back to work with a new lease on life, while looking forward to that next break!

Aaaaaaa-MEN!

And that's really the issue, right now. I _could_ pop in the back yard and get off a few shots, but with need to pack, clean, and also prep the new house (let alone actually move, eventually), I simply can't go shooting without feeling like I'm abandoning my responsibilities. Let's put it this way: Once we move, it is ON. I just tell myself it'll be over, soon, and all will be well. Haha.

If you heading N on I-5, you definitely passed them!

Hey Drew, Do your chores!!!  Then you can go play.

Some people keep a copy of Airgun Hobby magazine next to the can, or take in a phone thingy and check in on the forums, while you know, multi-tasking.

Seriously, I think we can all relate.  In my case, work can really interfere with my hobbies, 'honey-do's'  as well.  But it all works out in the end.  Patience, grasshopper.

@Drew
Going all out w/o some kind of break to relax is tuff.
Once a week, take 30 min out to relax and shoot a bit.
In the course of a week 30 min won't matter.
The trick is to have things semi-permanently setup or very quick to setup, then most of that 30 min is shooting time.
If you spend spend 30 min setting up and 30 min breaking down, that's 1 hour of time and you have not shot 1 shot.

Shooting is like sex. You have to make time for it every day. Just don't try to combine them to save time. Your groups will suffer.

I feel your pain brother,
We have not been able to shoot ever since my backyard range got shut down due to a neighbors complaint.

Amen. My neighbours shut mine down too. So I built a muzzle break for the 760 and took two doves today. Then my dad got ticked so all airgun shooting is shut down for now. Oh well, shoulda followed the rules. As for the withdrawels, I've been obsessively checking GTA.

I feel to OP's pain. The past couple of weeks has been a whirlwind. I had a recent death in the family (Godmother) which necessitated multiple trips out of state to arrange a funeral/viewing, plus taking care of unfinished affairs with her apartment/finances/etc. Couple that with juggling my job, family obligations, and the rest life throws at you and that leaves exactly 0%time for anything airgun related.

It is nice to check in on GTA to see recent builds, mods, and discussions on all things airgun

I'm very sorry for your loss. Your post reminded me to not be such a whiny little b!7@#... haha. Here I am, complaining that I haven't been able to shoot, and it's because I'm moving to a new house with space in which I can actually shoot. I need to drink a tall, cold glass of STFU!

I spent all day at the new place: removing old fixtures and fans, stripping door hardware, removing switch and plug plates, pulling baseboard, and mowing the horrible lawn. I stink like a ripe kill. It's time for a cold beer in the shower.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, longdx.  And Drew brings up a good point.  I have so much more to be thankful for than I do to complain about.  This morning, I got out of a comfortable bed, said good morning to my family, and had breakfast.  I'm sitting here enjoying this forum with fellow airgunners.  The list of blessings would more than fill the pages of this forum, so I'll just say "Thank you God!"  Yeah, I have inconveniences, aches, and pains, but that's life.  Overall, I have nothing to complain about.  Thanks, Drew, for putting things back into perspective.  I hope all my friends here have a great day! ;)

I couldn't deal with having a new gun at the house just staring at me but understand your situation though...it's an easy fix if you've got it that bad...MAKE TIME...that's what I do...whatever it takes.
