Title: Can Anyone Guess What Gun Shot this Group?
Post by: jmcgall1 on May 23, 2013, 01:27:25 AM
That proud moment when you get a lemon and turn it into a mean hunting machine.

My airgun never shot right. One day Superdomes shoot the best, the next day Destroyer Ex shoot better, but the groups all kind of not so good.
What to do?
Throw it out? Send it back? spend another few hundred on a better gun?

No. Fix it.

The first picture shows a typical group of Predator Polymags before tweaking. I think it has seven shots, one I thought was a flyer, but you can get an idea how the groups performed before.

The next two are five shot groups. All these groups are five shots at 20 yards, same gun, same shooter, same scope, same pellets, same weather :)

Can you guess the gun and the fix?

Won't guess on the gun but did you re-crown the barrel?

Haha I'm new to the air gunning world and this blog. I didn't realize when I changed the signature it would change it on things I had already posted! Yup this was from a powerline after I cut an inch off the barrel and used these grinders from the hardware store to give it a decent crown. It shot every pellet poorly before, but now they fly straight and true. For a forty dollar gun with a ten dollar scope, I'm as happy as can be.

Gamo! LOL......

Ha I'm guessing you've had bad experiences? Never shot a gamo, based on reviews, I don't plan to.

Yup, I keep a gamo in my tool box to use as a pry bar. (And it not worthy at that too) Did you just straight cut the barrel on a lathe then clean it up? I was wondering if you choked the end of the barrel down. Results look good!
I'm currently working on a friends barrel that seems to have the same issues.

Sometimes taking a walk around the hardware store is the best way to find what you need. I found some 150 grit (or so, it didn't say) grinding devices. They were simple shapes with a chuck sticking out I got one circle and one pyramid cone and used that and some finesse  to crown the barrel. Not professional but it cost $3 and worked well enough. To cut the barrel I simply used a level to make it vertical in my vice and used a hack saw with the horizontal top of the vice as a guide to make the cut. The barrel is in a shroud so I didn't worry about making it pretty, just functional.

That sounds awesome! Unfortunately I can't contribute much other than my 40 walmart gun haha but I'd definitely sounds like something fun to do.

Robert, he did a chop and recrown:

...this was from a powerline after I cut an inch off the barrel and used these grinders from the hardware store to give it a decent crown. It shot every pellet poorly before, but now they fly straight and true. For a forty dollar gun with a ten dollar scope, I'm as happy as can be.

I did the same to my son's 880 a while back and opened a thread on it
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=45546.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=45546.0)

After recrowning the groups I'm getting are just under 1" at 25yds with RWS Superdomes if I toss out the fliers.   Doesn't seem to be a fluke either; shot two groups a few days ago and they were practically identical.  Not too shabby for a $40 rifle but the success James is having with the Polymags has inspired me to try some different pellets.  I just hope our 880 doesn't have the same expensive appetite for Polymags.  ;)  Don't have to buy too many tins of those pricey buggers to justify using a different rifle.

@ Nervoustrigger
Hey Jason, I did appreciate the write up you did on the powerline, definitely helped reaffirm my ideas of trying a recrown.  Nobody else really seems to care enough about the cheap gun to do a write up haha. as a college student it's all i can afford. (i cant believe the price of a high pressure pump) I did also notice the rifling had stopped b4 the end of the barrel which is a poor design. Ill do a complete write up of the results soon after more testing, hope my girlfriend lends me the time to do a complete pellet test haha. My main use of this gun is for hunting, so I'm a happy camper with polymags working the way they do. I did notice the groups open up more than expected at thirty yards but it was a little windy so ill check back on how far I can bring this gun out to plink with. I also noticed that the barrel was considerably better quality than I had expected it to be. Wasn't coiled steel it was consistent and straight. These are cheap guns and I hope with more testing you find a pellet that really works with your gun. Then the fun becomes seeing how far out you can shoot!

I do also need to give some praise to the tasco  3-7 rimfire scope. For a ten dollar amazon add on item it vastly improved on the bundled optic. There is a slight parallax adjustment if you read the manual making 7x mag decent at 20+ yards. Can not be adjusted on the fly however. If you look at the second pic the first group at 20yd is an inch low and a quarter inch left. The scope clicks 1/4 in at 100 yd. 20/100 is 1/5 and 1/5 of 1/4 is 1/20 in/click. 20 vertical clicks and five clicks horizontal and bang, there goes the bullseye.
