Title: Bent the barrel on my Trail NP.
Post by: Kowboi on April 26, 2013, 08:43:40 PM
I was shooting the Trail NP last night and at one point when I went to cock it the barrel slipped out of my hand and slammed closed with terrific force. My first thought was "I hope the barrel is ok."  I had it zeroed at 30 yards but now it shoots at least 2 feet higher than it did before.

Set barrel end to end between 2 wood blocks and with a wood block mid barrel hit it progressively harder with a small sledge hammer until it bends back to a satisfactory POI. ( using a press gives better control, but both accomplish the same end result. )

I'd use an accurate straight edge to measure straightnes and the the device in the above link or something similar.

Bob's Barrel Straightener is what you need to build...

I've never "triggered off" a barrel, however I do bend my barrels so the point of impact at 30 yards is within 1/2" of the optically centered scope, and I use this rig for doing the barrel tweaking............

If more bending force is needed a large c-clamp can be used instead of the "hand clamp". The "secret" is to go slowly bending the barrel a bit at a time checking between tweaks till the poi is where it needs to be. LOL.....while I need the above setup to remove "snoop" from the barrel of a break barrel rifle, I've also used my "tweaking tree" next to my practice range to add "snoop" or adjust the poi left or right..........

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'm gonna build CDT's barrel droop device, allready have a straight edge to use. Excellent advice.

Yep... easy to make and easy to use.  ;) I've straightened many barrels with it.  ;D

Should I leave the shroud in place when I attempt to straighten the barrel?
