Title: ANOTHER 1377 post ;)
Post by: cwlongshot on April 24, 2013, 09:08:08 AM
Morning all,

Well after spending the better part of a week reading all the posts on the 13xx platform and remembering the fun had with one I had years ago. I bought another one!

I spent all Sunday afternoon going thru boxes in the attic looking for my old 1322 with the butt stock.  No luck... I also had a CO2 .22 that was just like it. That one was leaking and I traded it back to Crosman for a back packer in early '90's. but cannot find that one either. I'm pretty sure that one is up at my place in upstateNnew York. Anyhow, I bought a .177 caliber this time too, as all prvious have been .22's.

I also ordered a red dot and a Crosman steel breech. Next will be the flat top piston and associated parts. The pistol should be here this afternoon according to PA.
First mod will be cleaning barrel and checking crown, then trigger job. After that some shooting!! When the steel breech and red dot arrive ill install them.

I'm also thinking ill make some stocks for them. I am really liking some I see others make and may "steal" some ideas from them. ;)

All this to help pass the time for my Steroid MAC1 special Sheridan! ::) I haven't yet given up completely, on getting my original 'Dan back either. I'm Just preparing myself for the increasingly obvious conclusion...

More on the '77 to come!!!  This air gun stuff really is addicting!!! ;)

You can bank on the pics brother!!

Also, I watched a clip where a guy used a lighter parts to mod his breech and bolt. Then drilled and made a ext to seat pellets deeper.

Can anyone help me locate it again?

Hi All:
cw don't throw that lighter away just yet. Make sure to keep the spring you'll need it once you loose the spring & detent ball to your safety.Be sure to keep the little O ring as well . Also If you have a set of nail clippers make sure to keep the little chain that goes with it. There is your 2mm detent ball just clip the chain and keep the rest. I would also make a trigger stop they work great 1/8 "drill ,8-32 tap ,8-32x1/4" set screw. Any questions you have I'll be glad to answer them.

Well, I dusted off the pellet trap and set it up for some 10 meter shooting in the basement.  I got some things to do this AM so I only shot about 30-40 shots.

Once I had the dot sited in, shooting off hand, using 10 Crosman Destroyers pellets and five pumps I shot this target.

After thorough research, ;) to understand what does what and why. I decided to make my own enhanced and extended bolt. (probe)

I started with the factory brass bolt. I drilled out the knob and removed it. I drilled the hole and tapped it 8-32.

Then I chucked the probe up in the drill press and using a file, I reduced the diameter .010 in front of the o ring groove. Then with a 1/16 bit, drilled a hole in the tip of the probe.

Then using a piece of 1/16'' stock, I first thinned it slightly to make room for the epoxy. Then cut to length and epoxied it into the probe.

Lastly I polished the probe with some 600g paper and re installed the O ring.

Then of coarse I installed it into the gun using the bolt knob that came with the steel breech and went and shot it.

Now I did not chrono this before in order to see any difference. But based on what others saw, its gonna be small maybe 5 fps.

Last night I started my FTP instal... I made the mistake of drilling too far back and drilled into the valve port ruining a perfectly good valve.  :-[ :-[ :-[  I was worried in hitting the O ring... SO I ordered a new valve and will do it correctly this time!! I also decided to make a carbine out of this one and ordered a Crosman butt stock.

I also Installed a solid pin up front.

I ordered a NCStar reflex site last week and the dot is just too big for my liking. Because of the butt stock I decided to install peep sites.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20guns/Crosman%201377/null_zpsc11b96e2.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20guns/Crosman%201377/null_zps6371e445.jpg)

I also cut some Allen cap screws for the grip. I REALLY hated the stock screws!  ;) ;)

I have always like good open sites and these are Williams site W/ target knobs for a 3/8 grooved receiver. I think it will go well with the stock and 18'' barrel that I have planned.

I also took a pic of the extended probe from the bottom. I removed it and took off that little ''post'' of brass. I was thinking I needed it for support, but I drilled plenty deep for that. ;)

For those of us who do not have a drill press, I believe you can buy aftermarket extended probe bolts. I will have to do a little research, but I believe I have seen them in the past.

There are plenty of bolts on eBay for $20.  I like that stainless steel one with the magnet to hold the bolt back.  I watched a youTube video on probe modding that said if you make the tip too long it will give you a decrease in fps.

Mine cost me nothing and took maybe 15 minutes...  ::) ::)  BUT I do LIKE the magnet!!! I have a few REM that are .220 but .250 long... So MAYBE I could remove the back of the bolt and epoxy one on...  ;)

I don't know if the loss would be less than the gain tho. Meaning if you GAIN say 10 fps, seating the pellet too deep may loose you 8. (Not 18) BUT not all pellets are created equal, so choose a pellet and build your probe. ;)  That's the fun of modding, you get change it to fit YOUR needs. ;)

I have installed a brass safety and Allen bolts for the grip and breech. MUCH better than the &^^& reg/Phillips the factory uses...::)

Last week I pretty much decided I NEEDED a 2289.... :o :o ::) I even went so far as to make up the order... I just did not send it.  ::)

So after coming to my senses, I found a deal on a butt stock and called Crosman Monday and ordered a 24'' .177 barrel! (I'll chop it down to 14'' or 16'') Any how I decided to convert my 1377 into a carbine.

I picked up a metal barrel band for the longer barrel. I have installed a AimPoint CompC scope and a FTP/V this week end I'll get the chrony out and see what I get with that.

Here's my carbine. This has an 18 inch barrel, a 2289 fore end, custom bolt handle, and a Gamo 4x32 scope. Also a custom muzzle brake. I also drilled out the pump hinge and replaced the roll pin with a stainless steel 1/16th inch pin and nuts. Pumps a lot smoother. Also put a lighter trigger spring in. Really fun to shoot.

The grain looks pretty good already.  Does it have a penetrating oil rubbed in already?  It looks like it does.  If not, rub in some boiled linseed oil (BLO) to make the grain really pop out.  I've done some tool handles in cherry and walnut, and a good smooth sanding followed with BLO gives an amazing grain rendition.  From there, most any clear finish will do.  I prefer lacquer over polyurethane.  Poly is nice and durable in part because it is plastic but it also feels like plastic and I find it to be slightly unpleasant to the touch, especially if you go with multiple coats to improve the appearance of depth.

My favorites are Linseed and Tung oils.  I recently tried Danish oil and it came out nice too. But I prefer more depth, IMHO. linseed/linspeed give me that best.

Tru oil from birchwood casey also does a fine job too.

BUT a good finish is 99% prep. the wood needs to be as smooth as you can get it. Sand down to at least 320/400g then start with the steel wool grades, damp wetting and allowing to dry between. Even then apply a coat or two and steel wool it off! After about 5-6 coats, if you have prepped properly, you will begin to see what your going to get. DRY, LIQUID WOOD!

I don't know if anything has been rubbed into it. I put them on as is. Sounds good. I will give that a try. Thanks.

I hate sanding, but I want a nice finish, sooooo.... ::) Thanks CW.

My main reason for doing the telescoping stock is for my grandkids who don't have the arm length to handle the Crosman stock. This way we can pass the gun back and forth and everyone can adjust for their size. I will put the Crosman stock on my other 1322 and maybe put the 24 inch barrel I have on hand on that gun. I will probably go with my stock sights on that. I have some options, so we shall see. I will post pics once I get the parts in and the gun ready. Should be cool! ;D

I was able to spend some time running a bunch of pellets thru all my guns yesterday!

1) I got 770fps with 20 pumps and a BEEMAN Laser pellet 7.2g

2) I got 748fps with 17 pumps and a Crosman Destroyer pellet 8g

3) I got 660fps with 20 pumps and a Exact Monster pellet of 13.2 g

4) I got 615fps from 17 pumps and another Exact Diablo pellet of 11g

At first I found I was topping out at 500fps W/11g pellet. I was getting that was SAME velocity from 10-17 pumps! So, I pulled piston out, pulled off O rings and checked head space. I found a bad O ring and head space off!! I re adjusted, lubed and installed new O rings and tested again. Velocity jumped to numbers quoted above.  :P ;)

Like I said, I'll post up pics later. I tested about 5/6 different pellets at 2 pump intervals as you did above. Looks like the FTP netted me about a 15% increase in velocity. A bit short of the 100fps claims. But being able to pump additional times makes it worthwhile. I still need to pin this valve and that will boost vel more.

Ooh and if I am figuring it correctly the 7g pellet nets me 10 fpE and the 13g 16 fpE!  :-\ :-* :-\ :-* :-\ :-*

One of my younger granddaughters has trouble with her older sister's 760, but when I put this in her hands she was happy. It fits her a lot better at the shortest position. The only thing I do not know yet is whether this UTG dot scope will work for her. I found I had to mount the scope higher because of the angle of the stock, or should I say lack of angle? Since a dot scope is more forgiving of changes of angle I opted to go this route. We will be shooting this together next weekend and then we shall see.

Time for a little update!

I have been shooting this gun mostly for rat patrols. Its nice that I can leave it charged and ready to shoot without fear of a fatigued spring as I would get in my Webly. The other plus is the wife can shoot this one. She had a couple days off so I set her up so when she saw a rat, she could easily eliminate it. Well altho she is quite fermium with a red dot, the first time she had the opportunity she forgot the dot, as she was looking for it, (Thinking it was on when it was not) the rat made flight. The next time, she fumbled getting the dot on and again the rat got away. SO, I mounted a old Tasco Tactile 4X scope WITH a lighter dot on the X hairs. Then I installed a scope ring with a little pica-tinny rail. To that I mounted a Ultra Fire RED LED Illumination. (Night shots on chicken feeding vermin)

Then I re sited it in, MAN THIS THING IS  A LASER!!! It shoots JSB domes at 11g into a 22cal bullet hole!!!

Update on this setup. I had to remove the adapter. Comes loose too easily. I think it really needs holes drilled in the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions and the holes tapped. I need a tap and die set before I attempt it though. With only the breech and grip screws to hold it, it comes loose after pumping awhile. Should be a pretty simple fix.

I am playing with a design for a stock and I blew myself away when I thought of it, it is so simple I need to pick up some pieces Monday or Tuesday. It is so hot here 90+ in the shade. It makes me feel like doing nothing.   We don't have AC in the house but her car does Can you say road trip  ;D    ???  The one other good thing is the shop stays cool if I keep the doors shut  8)
