Title: piston removing from ninja tank
Post by: airpuffhunter on April 19, 2013, 10:54:37 PM
Hello all

I have a 48 CI 3000 psi ninja tank, I want to remove the piston so there is no pressure regulation
does any body know how to do this?
or is there another way?

thank you

If you remove the piston, the air will leak out between the bonnet and the top of the regulator, as both pieces seal on the piston O-rings.... To make the regulator bypass, you have to make the regulator piston stay back off the seat, but leave it in place....

Drain the tank....
Remove the bonnet from the regulator (two set screws, then unscrew it)....
Remove the piston, spring (or belleville washers) and shims....
Remove the pin-valve and spring and set them aside (you may still want to use them)....
Determine how much room there is between the shoulder on the piston and the shoulder inside the top of the regulator (ie where the spring goes)....
Make a spacer from a piece of metal tubing that is slightly longer than that space (0.040" / 1mm will do) and use it in place of the spring....
Slide the tube spacer over the piston and slide in the piston.... the spacer will prevent the piston from moving down against the seat and shutting off the flow....
If you wish to still use the pin valve, reinstall it in the bonnet and reinstall the bonnet.... It can be left out if you wish....

The piston on the regulator will no longer be able to reach the seat, so the full tank pressure will flow through the hollow piston and be available at the output.... If you leave the pin-valve in place, you may have difficulty operating it because of the much higher loads.... You will be able to open it (once, slightly) but depending on the actuating mechanism depressing the pin-valve it may then lock if the loads are too high.... A better solution is to leave it out and control the flow of the air some other way (if necessary).... If you do that, then of course you can never remove the tank with any air in it, it must be empty.... If you fill the tank to a pressure higher than the downstream side burst disc, it will blow.... Therefore, you will have to replace it with a 5K inlet side burst disc.... It is NOT pipe thread, do NOT use a 1/8" NPT plug....
