Title: .177 Condor Leading? KryTech Wax Extends cleaning intervals
Post by: TimmyMac1 on March 21, 2013, 11:10:46 AM
To extend barrel cleaning intervals you can shoot KryTech waxed pellets. It works and was instrumental in my 3rd place at the BenchRest Worlds in 2011. We cleaned our barrels every 100 rounds (every two cards)and used Waxed and weighed ammo. All the top guys did it. The World Champion and Me in 3rd used the same Tight 2 groove Stainless Steel .22 cal Benchmark barrel in HV (20 fpe) class competition. We also both shot 13.4 grain JSB RS pellets at 815 FPS cause that is what worked best at 25 meters at 20 fpe.  At 25 meters or 27.5 yards the .22 was the Best of all the calibers in real conditions and we had REAL conditions. On the third card in a 20 MPH headwind I shot the high card (248) of the HV event in really harsh conditions. Went from 8th after two cards to get a Worlds Bronze 3rd place.
The Benchmark .22 2 groove is a few thou tighter than normal .22 AG barrels and had an amazing tendency to lead up. WD40 is about the best way to remove excessive lead. I follow that with the Remington oil sprayed in the barrel and then pull patches till I stop at GRAY patch. I do not try to completely strip all the lead out as it takes a while to normalize if you do. We would get normalized grouping inside of two or three sighters when going to a new card from the cleaning bench.
Leading is always a problem when you go too fast in the wrong caliber.
A .177 Caliber Condor would probably shoot the Monster JSB 13.4 .177 decently but a Condor gun is way too powerful for .177 caliber and basically goes too fast with all ammo in the Puny Cal. If you take the hammer weight out of the gun and fitted a Standard flo tank you could get some measure of adjustability but what you have is Raw speed which translates to leading for sure. What works best is pellets going 800-900 fps. Condor set-ups are not adjustable really. They are WIDE FREAKING OPEN.
All the Condors I sell (preferably)are fitted with the Standard Tanks to take advantage of the potential efficiency of the 24" barrel.
I had built about 125 long barrel SS Airforce guns before the Condor was released. All with the Standard Tank. It was about efficiency which always traslates to a more elegant solution at relatively diminished performance from the MAX obtainable. With 2500 psi you can generate 40 good shots in a 5/8" group downrange per fill. Speed for the sake of speed is a goal that is achievable but it will not impress like a more efficeint solution can. Get over that and you can have a lot more success with Airguns. They are better subsonic for good reasons.
Firelapping will improve groups but I'm not sure it will eliminate leading at 1300 fps. It will help. What will make the biggest difference is putting a .25 cal barrel on the thing and putting enough pellet weight in it to get it to go 900 with something heavy enuf. 1000 fps or higher Rarely works well. It is a fairly pointless exercise as many have illustrated.
It will not make it shoot poorly to use the .177 Hi-Flo Tank with a .25 barrel. That would be the most ideal combination you could choose without removing the hammer weight AND GOING WITH A STANDARD TANK.

Love the KryTech  .... indeed it does what AG's claim used in proper dosage  ;)

I just started using KryTech after reading posts like this. This is great information. Thanks for sharing your wisdom on this forum.
