Title: Mac1 hunter carbine! Help me decide
Post by: kgphotos on March 12, 2013, 12:58:44 PM
I would love to get some input from owners/shooters of the Mac1 hunter. I was "this close" to buying a FX Royale Field Target model. I even have an order in with AOA to call me when/if they get any in stock. This past weekend I attended the Pacific Coast airgun show and talked with Tim from Mac 1 airguns. He had a Mac 1 hunter with HPA bottle and I quickly fell in love with the rifle. It was Art's "Hulk Hunter" I don't compete but I still love to get the smallest groups that I can and I love to put pellets on little varmint noggins "way out there"  I think I know the answer but I will ask anyway. In your opinions is the Mac 1 hunter a better built gun and more of a precision machine than a FX Royale FT.  It is only a couple hundred more $ for the Mac 1. Specifically I am looking at a .22 with the Benchmark barrel, HPA bottle set up for 33+ fpe. I want to go with the shortest barrel that will still give me 33fpe. Does Tim's LDC do a good job at 33fpe? I like made in USA and I like that Tim is only about a 4 hour drive away if I ever needed help. You can probably tell that I am talking myself into the Mac1 but I need you enablers to push me over the edge.  Thank you for any advice and input that you may offer.

Well if I had that kind of money, I most definetly would buy one of Tim's babies. Reason being is his support. He is open almost every day. I can call him and get him on the phone. He supports what he sells and the quality of his workmanship is fantastic.
That is my story and I will stick by it...:)
Best of luck on your decision.
Gene

Welcome Kenny!!
I can only speak on AOA customer service. Luke warm at best. Hear only great things about Timmy and his stuff.
Good luck!!

I have visited Tim a few times, and on one occasion he showed me his rifle.  NICE trigger, and it looked easy to work on.  He tore it down in a few minutes while explaining (mostly over my head) about the features.  After he removed the barrel, he took more apart just to show me how easy it was to work on.

Tim is an accuracy fanatic and takes pride in his work.  He was actually tearing down his rifle to give a customer his personal barrel since the customer was in a hurry.

I bought a Condor from Tim with his Gen 2 brake.  It is not M-rod quiet, but I live in LA and shoot in my backyard with no problems from nosy neighbors.

Timmy is spot on with customer service, he currently has my blue streak in for work, hope to have it home soon......

Oh and he is a supporting member HERE...

I know nothing about either rifle but I would buy from Mac1. If you were to have a problem would you rather have to ship the rifle to California or Sweden? From what I have read in posts here on the forum, you can not depend on AoA to stand behind the product after the sale. The exact opposite seems to be true of Timmy Mac, people here on the forum speak nothing but good about him. He does freaquent this forum and is always helpful and willing to answer questions. That would be enough to seal the deal for me.

i just bought a Timmy Mac tuned Disco with the gen 2 brake. it's crazy accurate and the guy was great to deal with. the brake makes it about as quiet as my .22 NPSS. i will definitely buy from him again, probably a marauder...

Mac1 Hunter is my dream gun. If I could afford it, I would buy it in a heart beat.

Kenny, I told you,you want the best. Service is #1 with Tim. Like you said 4 hour drive, and you can pick it up. I love my Hulk Hunter,I'm going to the Temecula Challenge so is Tim. That is going to be a lot of fun.
Kenny you still there? Make the call, he'll give you a date, drive down pick it up.
Best of luck

Thanks Art. And thank you for spending time with me at the show on Sunday. I really appreciate you letting me shoot your rifle. I'm convinced!  I'll be calling Tim to place an order. My buddy with me at the show really liked your rifle as well. He came along just to see what airguns are all about and he is even tempted by Tim's guns.  I have a question for you Art. I will have Tim make me a 30+fpe rifle. How effective is his Gen II brake at that power level? Also, is the wood cheek piece on the rifle adjustable for height? Thanks again,

Hi Uncle Kenny. If you decide to get the rifle from Tim, can you bring it out to Brad's place, next time we have a get together, so I can fondle it for a while?

Kenny, We have to shim between the plunger body it mounts to and the cheekpiece to space it up. Generally it works good with high mounts so it doesn't need to be raised in most cases. One customer made his own adjuster mechnaism and that is always an option but I haven't done one yet.
I have to get more Benchmark .22's. That will be what holds things up till they arrive.
