Title: B50/51 - Not supposed to be this easy
Post by: demarisl on March 01, 2013, 01:23:34 AM
Its been less than a month since I picked up my B50 from Mike Melick and, aside from getting a B51 stock from him, the only modifications I have made to the gun are the vinyl tubing depinger, the McMaster-Carr spring replacement for part 29, and replaced the striker guide rod (part 25) with a metric hex screw so I can adjust it through the hole for the safety.  With the striker guide set for full power, I only need to fill to 2,000 PSI which is nice since I only have a pump.

Have my F1 Chrony set up on my work bench with my duct seal trap behind it.  Three led puck lights are velcroed to the diffusers for constant lighting.  With my B51 in a Tipton Gun Vise, I place a level on top of the gun and when level, lock it into place.  This is on my desk right next to my computer and places the muzzle approximately 3 feet from the chrony.  Very repeatable.  Using Chairgun's Statistics program, all I have to do is load, shoot, enter the numbers into the program, and repeat.

Ran my first complete string tonight using Crosman Hollow Points weight sorted at 14.5 grains.  Other efforts were aborted because of operator error.  If you do not have the cursor in the data entry area no data is entered, weak battery, chrony not parallel with barrel, etc.

Anyway, starting at 2,000 PSI, I fired 49 shots (lost count) and ended at 1,200 PSI with the following results.

Not bad, 49 shots with a spread of 32 fps and just under 20 FPE.

Within this string there are 30 shots with only a 15 fps spread

and better yet a 20 shot string with an 11 fps spread.

Should be able to find the start point for that 20 shot string without too much trouble.  Sure wish there was an on board gauge to make things easier.

Now if the snow would just go away so I can get outside and find out what it likes to shoot ...

Larry,
You got some nice strings going even with the power maxed.  I had my B-50 almost 2 months from MM.  Been shooting like mad, @4k rounds so far.  I haven't done anything to the AG except allot of pumping.  No trouble at all, I'm really pleased with this gun so far.   Been starting my strings at 2200psi, take 40 shots and end at @1400/1500 psi.  Don't have a chrony yet but the FPS or accuracy doesn't seem to fall off even if I go past 50 shots.  I'm shooting Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum .177 Cal, 10.5 Grains, Round Nose with great groups at 20yds.
I going to start a few mods like you, spring, turn down the power to get around 16-18 fpe.  Right now stock seems to suit my basement shooting great.  Mostly for target shooting these setting are working just fine.
Hope everything stays easy for both of us, so far so good.  Every AG I've bought from Mike M has been great.
