Title: A quick look at the Benjamin Rogue .357 (video)
Post by: Tpatner412 on February 25, 2013, 05:28:47 PM
Okay.  So I want to preface this video with the back story so my intentions are not misrepresented.  I was fortunate enough to get to run about 30 rounds through a Rogue this past May.  The Rogue belongs to Lloyd Sikes, who as many of you know, created a good bit of the tech inside of the gun.  So as you would expect, the gun in his possession works as it should.  So this is a representation of a perfectly normal, fully functional Rogue.  Whatever problems others had with the 1st version, were never present to me in my experience with the exception of the magazine not cycling all types of bullets well.

I would hope that the issues presented to Crosman with the initial run of Rogues were taken care of and the Gen 2's are going to be much better.  I have not heard a whole lot though.  I think most are probably too shy because some have taken it upon themselves to bash Crosman at every turn.  Which is your choice, but please do not bring that to this post as I am only representing my experience with the gun.  Although it was short, I am going to go out on a limb and say that my 30 shots puts me 30 shots ahead of 90% of folks out there in terms of who has and has not shot the gun.  Now how many of them had good experiences with the gun I do not know, but I did and that is what I am trying to convey in the video.  Not trying to sell the gun, not trying to get people to buy it, just want to put my thoughts and experience out there.

With all that said, the Rogue would not be much first choice for a hunting gun.  Not because it was inaccurate or anything like that, but because it is big and heavy.  It's length alone puts me off.  But you cannot  beat how quiet the gun is for a stock big bore.  Compared to some others I have shot, the gun was as silent as I imagine one can get....although I know AZ has and will continue to have a say in how quiet a big bore can be.

Now if I was to buy a big bore and had the money to spend, I would take a shot at the Rogue.  On medium power, I think it got about 15 shots before needing to refill it.  Not sure what they advertised it as but again, in comparison to other big bores, I was impressed with that.  The LED screen was kind of cramped for my liking and I think Crosman has corrected that with the Gen 2.  Otherwise, give the video a look, tell me what you think.  I realize it was not very in depth but it's what I have and I figure there are some folks out there who might like to see it.

Enjoy,

Tyler

Nice video. I love the look on your face. I see that look every time I let someone shoot one of my Big Bores.

Yeah.  They are a ton of fun.  I just remember thinking, "it's just an airgun, how much can it really kick?"

The camera must have been further away from the gun than it looked because for that big gun it sounded whisper quiet ! Accuracy looked incredible to me. As far as looks go, I think its super ugly. But I'm only referring to its color scheme witch does nothing for me at all, but thats just personal preference. Video reviews are just the best.  Love to watch them all ! Thanks for taking the time !

I sat next to Tyler and can vouch for how quiet the Rogue is. I could probably get away with shooting it in my backyard, if my back stop could handle it. Thanks for the review.

Cool video, I like the Rogue, but I'll never be able to afford one.

How do you get those clay targets to stay in the holes in the cardboard ? Are the holes just cut to size and the clay targets just pushed in. That looks like fun breaking those clays.

I was sitting there too and I also took my turn shooting that thing. It was great fun. It had plenty of power and was very accurate. We did do a little experimenting with the power levels and a few types of ammo. (All under Lloyd's supervision of course.) That particular gun performed very well IMO. But I can definitely see where owning one and expecting "that kind" of performance would require an extensive amount of trial and learning.

Great video! I wonder how well these sell. Its a hunting rifle so, I wonder at that price range how many people are attracted to it. The Sam Yang big bores are half the price so they seem more attractive to the average hunter looking for a quiet alternative. I own neither so I really can't say. High end air rifles are already a niche market. I dropped nearly $1500 to get set up with a AA S510 and a pump and people think I am crazy. I always get the "you know what that kind of money will buy you in a firearm?"

Great video, shows enough of the gun to satisfy me. Defintely a niche gun.  I can't get into big bores but its good to watch those who are having a great time with them.

They just stick into them.  Never really got too much of an up close look at them actually.  The holes are pre-cut to size.  It makes for a heck of a reactive target!

Great Video Tyler! upon shooting the Rouge and some of the other big-bores there, I could not believe a big-bore could be so quiet. I was impressed with it for sure.

Nice vid. I remember seeing a hunting show where the media guy with crosman shot a deer using that rifle. It was a instant kill heart shot if I remember right.

It would be nice to have one. With the shrouded barrel it is probably the quietest big bore out there.

So, I am wondering do guns with computer contolled regulator systems and electronic "firing" mechanisms produce more accurate shots?  Or is it just that these systems are on higher dollar guns with better barrels, quality control and overall have more precise components installed?
I know the price on a gun like this is hard to swallow but you get what you pay for. I would be really attracted to this gun if it was in a small caliber. When I looked at buying my first PCP gun, one of my choices was a Marauder but after seeing all the posts on trying to make the gun shoot more accurate and all the modifications people were doing, not to mention the headaches of finding the perfect pellet for the gun. So I came to the conclusion that you could easily end up with a $1000 Marauder before it shot accurate.
So shelling out $1300 for a 9mm air rifle with high accuracy doesn't seem unreasonable. I'm sure it takes a lot more on the manufactures side to get a big bore air rifle to shoot accurately over a same size powder burning counterpart.
