Title: HPA QB79 21 FPE (pics and small update)
Post by: wilsonj1018 on February 18, 2013, 10:15:02 AM
well i know this isnt anything special, but i thought id let u guys know about it. Last week i purchase a QB79 with full tune from Mike at flying dragon, also bought scuba tank, fill adaptors, new 13ci bottle. Mike did alot of work for that extra 50$ u spend for a performance tune. Quite surprising amount actually. As soon as i recieved it first thing i went to the chrony. Well i run about 30 shots across it that avgd like 680ish with 14.3 cphp, then i was empty that was a 90gr disposable gone in 30 some odd shots. I thought oh boy this thing is gonna not so good on hpa lol. Next morning i recived my 13 ci 850psi ninja, so i went to the local paintball field as i havent recived my scuba yet, i had to pay 4$ to fill it...... Got back home and put on hpa bottle and proceeded to chrony it. It lasted roughly 70 shots at aroung 710 fps with the cphps. Frankly i wasnt satisfied so i took it apart and did a bit of valve work, re done my transfer port. Chrony time again, made it to 725fps and still wanted more lol.

phone wouldnt let me type more lol. So i took it apart again and proceded to do away with most of the aluminum on the valve. Reassembled chronyd around 755. I wanted more so i decided to up the reg pressure. I didnt have any shims so i made one out of a 3/8 id washer i ground, filed, and sanded to perfection. Off to paintball field for another fill. It was free this time. Checked out out pressure and it was hovering around 960. I said poop this aint gonna get me to my 20 fpe i want lol. Well surprise the cphps flew across the chrony at 21 fpe for 47 shots between 802 fps and 817 fps. I couldnt be any happier. Ps i forgot to mention i did a bit of trigger work and its now breaking very clean at 18oz :) Josh

dont have a spare scope for it at the moment or i would. The barrel may be too good to swap out. Im holding 3/8th in groups at 15yds with open sights now

Josh, I'd say you're about "there". :)

I haven't shot mine over a Chrony since I got it, but Mike told me it was shooting 699 with Super H-points on CO2 and now that I'm running regulated at 1100psi, I have to think I'm just brushing 800 with the H-points or the JSB Jumbo Exact Express.

I feel that if I do my part, I can put them literally in the same hole at 15 yds. Of course, I have to not eat too much nor drink too much coffee (or wine the night before) in order to do that, but I'm pretty confident that the gun is more than up to the task. I doubt that the groups will open up much if I do my part, too.

I'm curious about the trigger work. Did you find instructions someplace. I'd like to lighten mind just a bit.

i just opened up the trigger plate adjusted by eye and feel, i replaced the stiff trigger spring with one from a pilot g2 gel pen that i clipped about a 1/4in off of. mikes polishing was so good i didnt bother doing more. the return spring screw is turned mostly all the way in now, middle screw is turned to just past the point of the trigger breaking so i have no over travel, may have to back out the upper sear engagment screw as mine needed some extra travel now thats its so light i could slap the stock to fire it lol ;D if u wanna know what i did to my valve ill post pics when i reseal the gun in a week or so as im losing about 200psi in 24hrs. good luck and keep me updated.

now for update on gun. yesterdays info i gathered reflected cumulative fpe/ci was .66, so i decided i want better. i started clipping hammer spring coils 1/4 coil at a time until i got desired effect, ended up being 3.5 coils. now im sitting on a 802 fps avg on a 2500 fill with 950ish psi input from reg and getting 53-55 shots till i refill at 1k. i can shoot about 70 shots but after the 55 they decline a bit to about 765 when at about 70th shot then its down to 500 then pssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhttttttttttttt. so now im more than happy with my 55 20fpe shots  ;D

After the valve size reduction, it went faster..right?  More volume.

HPA is pretty much proportional....the speed  and number of the shots from 1500 to 1000psi is very close to the speed  shooting from 3000 to 2500.  If you got 55 good shots from 2500 to 1000psi, then you could expect 25% more shots i filled to 3000psi (or about  68 shots...call it 1450 foot pounds per 3K to 1K tank full). So if you only want to shoot a few shots, can fill it to 1500psi  and get the same velocity (but fewer shots...like 17-18 shots) as filling it to 3000psi.  Good to remember when there is a bakyard pest and you need  a fill.

time to leave the chronograph and try various pellets for accuracy.

yea Ribbonstone i believe you are correct. im just waiting for my scope to ship that i purchased a week ago ??? im done with my tuning im happy with it for now cphps are doing as good as i can do with open sights that are absolutley horrid at best lol. shot 5in group at 100yds today for chits and giggles lol suprised at the power they retain, my .177 guns have trouble making it through paper at that range lol.

All I can tell you is that as I've swapped to PCPs (and HPA's) that I've only have one scope out of two dozen &^^& out.  From $29 "loss leaders" to $300 scopes, only had one that was a "$)((#" (and it probably would have gone ba in the box without ever being on an airgun). Do not put too much faith in brands, if it looks clear and crisp to you, it will probably stay that way for years and years.

Also worth a mention, is that only about 15% of QB barrels are total "turds". Some may like the last pellet you expect, but so far darned few of them refused to shoot.

So get out there with a selection of pellets (an Straight Shooters still have test packs that CROSS MAKERS....not all of the varitey pack are from one maker).

Did I get that right, 5" at 100 yards with open sights? and you're unhappy?

well Pak ive been shooting powder burners off a bench since i was knee high. i guess i just expect to much from a pellet rifle. every rifle i own other than pellet rifles are easily sub moa, most hold around a 1/2in at 100 but im learning i cant shoot as far slowly, my back yard pistol range has targets out to 85yds so you could say im kind of an extremist when it come to plinking. i regularly shoot 22lr 2-400yds at 4-10in gongs. im really liking airguns so far they are much much much cheaper to shoot now that ammo has sky rocketed!

Can you modify any regulator to up the output pressure? If so how?

theyre are some types that are easily adjustable but it would be best to buy shims from the manufacturer and do it right. but my way works perfectly well if u want details pm me
