Title: A new to me HW97K
Post by: jdub on February 05, 2013, 01:27:09 AM
I picked this up from the gentleman on the yellow this week.  It's a circa 2005 rifle but it in great shape.  It has been tuned once and when it arrived today it was shooting just a little under what StraightShooters has listed for a new one so I took it apart and checked it out.

It was very clean.  There was just a little grit on the front of the pistion seal that felt like it could have been wearing off the seal, which seemed a little brittle.  The piston had been buttoned and the buttons were in good shape as was the compression tube.

I removed the heavy tar from the spring, top hat, and guide, and relubed same spring with some of the thinner moly mixture that Tom includes with his Vortek kits.  I also had a 26mm seal from Vortek so I replaced the existing seal with the Vortek.  I installed a bronze Tim E trigger as well as a bronze Tim E safety and put it back together.  I put a couple dozen pellets through it and then checked again and it's now shooting slightly over what StraightShooters lists for the same pellet in that rifle and hitting almost 13 FPE in .177.  The extreme spread was 7 fps and there's no twang.  A very nice shot cycle.  I'm limited in my distance shooting right now and everything was going into the same hole but I'll report more on accuracy when I can stretch out a bit.

I already bought a Steve Corcoran stock and a Sidewinder 30 and will be picking those up from Steve mid-week this week.   I can't wait!

Here's it's current form--not bad for an 8 year old rifle--but it will be looking very different in a few days.

Sounds like you've done a great job and your new numbers sound great. It looks very nice and I'm sure that any stock from Steve will definitely be a spectacular upgrade. Looking forward to checking out the new stock.

Probably the best looking thing to ever grace the desk of this Best Western hotel room:

Not the ideal locale for photos.  I'll take more when I'm back in town.  If it's not obvious that I'm a happy camper it should be.  It's a beautiful stock to go along with the beautiful R7 stock and Izzy grips I got from Steve earlier.

I also saw the unfinished Disco stock that Steve is raffling off for GTA this month.  The photos don't do it justice.  Very classy lines and a great looking piece of walnut!  http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=42126.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=42126.0)

Took a few this evening before the sun went down.  This stock looks different from every angle.  A lot of very cool figure that really needs to be seen in a hi-def video moving around instead of trying to capture with stills.

Yeah, it was well under $500.  Steve Corcoran's Sporters in this size start in the low $400 range.  This is one he had listed on his site and had on hand ready to go.   I went up to pick up my Izzy grip from him and checkout an HW95 stock he has in the works for me.  He had this 97 stock on display.  When he told me the price I was blown away!  I asked him to hold it for me and drove home and posted a WTB for a 97 to go with his stock.   The first time I've ever bought a rifle because I had a stock for it.  I had a 97 on my wish list but it went from several items down to the top of the list when I saw this stock.

Steve does amazing work.  One thing I really appreciate is that not only does he use beautiful wood but he designs his own stocks and they have really clean and classy lines.  You could paint any of his stocks black (which would be a crime) and you'd still have a classic looking stock with great lines.

that's natural walnut color you can not beat that and the most beautiful thing it does not show on pictures, when you look at that stock from one side you see light and dark grains, and when you change side of view the light grains become dark and the dark light. probably only people that seen walnut can understand what am talking about, and about color the dark colors on furniture are mostly used if the wood is not perfect so it hides imperfections
