Title: Noob question- Whats a barrel choke and why?
Post by: Coachkilla32 on February 04, 2013, 09:07:22 PM
I'm still learning all the lingo and what things mean and do. I referenced the library on this site but it didn't have anything regarding a barrel choke or why it would be desired ???. Thanks a bunch, guys.

As applied to airgun barrels it is a slight narrowing of the bore in the last inch or so at the muzzle.
It is done for sizing the pellet and stabilizing it in flight. For spring guns there is no need to have a choke as the initial blast sizes the pellet, but in pnumatic, CO2 and PCP guns the initial blast may not be sufficient to flare the skirt and size the pellet ensuring good engagement with rifling and a good seal so choking the barrel is beneficial. I just read an article on this just a few minutes ago which is where I got most of that info (the rest I made up).. strangely I don't recall which forum I read it on.. old age is *(&^. :(
<edit> OK, I didn't dream it here is the article I read

Awesome, Dukemeister, I appreciate the explanation! Makes sense to me now ;D. Not that I would be interested in this for my rifles since they are both springers  but how do they do that, do you know? I could probably find it on youtube.

This has some info.

I also remember Mac1 explaining how a tapered choke was best.

Awesome Guys!! Motorhead, Dukemeister and Kailua I bookmarked those links, I'm sure one day I will need to reference them again or at least pass it on to someone else to help educate another newbie. I feel so much smarter after spending my time on this forum contrary to what my wife thinks, yaaaa thats a lose-lose situation for me :(.
