I can't believe how accurate this gun is ! As near as I can tell, it was made in 1977 and still has the same cheap Tasco scope on it and I'm getting dime size 10-shot groups @ 20 yds time after time. What I don't understand about it is that using Crosman Premier Hunting 7.9gr @ 867 fps and Crosman Ultra Magnum 10.5gr, @ 651 fps at the same POA I'm hitting the same POI @ 20 yds. Does this sound right ? I would have thought that the heavier pellet would hit higher, or am I not understanding this ?

You are too close to the target to see much difference.
Stretch it out a little bit.
Try 30 yds and see what it does,... then go 50 yds.
It should make more sense then.

Same answer as above.

Thanks guys, I'm limited to 20 yds in my basement. It's 0 degrees outside so I'll have to wait a bit to get out to 30 yds, that's pretty much the limit on my property. I have to figure out where I can go to get over a 30 yd area.

One might be sealing a little better than the other? I'm going to PM you about your s/n to see if I can place it. A couple years back, I tried to set up a data base of s/n's by year, per factory or when purchases new. FWB used to provide the info for free but, last time I checked, they were charging $40 - $60 (depending upon who you talked to and the exchange rate).

Lay down, shoot prone from the living room,... down the hallway,... past the kids room,... through the open bathroom window,....

(Just kidding,... sort of), LOL!
Oh yeah,.... Almost forgot,...
To get the Maximum effect and enjoyment from this,
Make sure to have your Camo Face paint on, and your GTA hat turned around backwards, and be in the firing position,...
... at the moment just when the wife comes home from a long hard day at work.
She'll just love you all the more ! ;) ;D 8)

That's funny, thanks for the laugh. I have a 175' lot but I'd have to stand out on the street to get that distance and some of the fuddy-duddies around here wouldn't like that. I'll figure something out.

heavier pellets spend more time in the barrel as gun is recoiling, so a heavier pellet leaves muzzle after recoil has ever so slightly elevated muzzle position.
So ... pellets POI hits target higher.
Savvy ?

This would be my answer.

Got it !!

Let me add ... after having a FWB 124 myself for over 25 years, Hands down IMO best shooting pellet is a JSB or Air Arms 8.4 Gr dome pellet ( same pellet actually ) ;)
-
The best grouping pellet in my FWB 124 is CPHP 7.9gr followed by JSB Exact 8.4gr. Best group at 33yards is a little larger than dime for my sweet FWB.
-
" My FWB 124 continues to amaze me " Really?!?!?! That's a big shocker. Have you tried the JSB Express or JSB exacts yet? Or H&N FTS/FTT's or whatever they are called now? These guns are legendary for a reason my friend. And it ain't just for their good looks either :) Happy Shooting!!!!

It's called match grade barrels. Same thing with Anschutz's brief entry into the sporter market about the same time. Both companies specialized in target rifles, so naturaly, when it came to barrels...... :)

As stated, the distance of 20 yards isn't going to exhibit much of a high or low poi regardless of pellet weight. Stretching the distance out will show the poi shift alot more. The time it takes for pellet travel through the barrel is also dependant not only pellet weigh but pellet fit in the barrel which can result in the high low shift of certain pellets striking the target high because they reach a higher tradjectory sooner or low because they haven't reach as high on the tradjectory path before striking the target. This to me is the key reason why it is important to shoot a lot of different pellets and find which shoots the most accurate at a given distance as well as which shoots the most efficient and shoots the best in a particular spring piston rifle. Often times an experienced shooter can hear this by the way the rifle sounds when shot. Just another one of the fascinating aspects of shooting a springer. Especially a top quality rifle as you have in the FWB Sporter. I zero most of my springers to about the 25 yard range with the best all around pellet the rifles' shoots, and adjust for varying distance. Close up shots require some degree of holdover ( or aiming high to compensate barrel to scope height AND pellet rise) while longer shots require hold over to compensate for pellet fall on the back side of the pellet tradjectory curve and loss of projectile velocity. The varying degree of shooting angle also adds to the mix. Since I plink most of the time, when the occasion arises that I have a 'live' shot to take if in a hunting situation, then I have to adjust my poa to compensate this,... And again the distance plays a role in that as well. All I can tell you is to find the best pellet for your rifle and practice a lot,....and in different situations. Then you will become very proficient with your FWB Sporter as so many have before you. Like I said, these rifles have attained ledgedary status for a reason ;) hth's
