I am new to GTA and just now finding out how "into" air guns one can get. I have had a Gamo Hunter 890 for 12 years now and have had some fun with it. Just recently changed the scope mount (to a one piece) and the trigger to a (GRT-III) . . it's a lot more fun now.
I looked up an air gun specialty store, not too far from my house, and went to see what they had. They had mostly PCP guns, and a few springers and high-end stuff at that. The owner was a nice guy and took some time to talk to me and let me shoot a couple of his guns. The one that I really remember is the Daystate MK4 . . how could I forget!!! What a dream, I should have never gone in to that store . . . $2,300 for an air gun? I want to put my Gamo in the garbage now!!! I also shot a Benjamin Marauder and really liked that one as well, it's no Daystate though!!!! I'm hooked, my next air gun will be a PCP.

That's what happens when you shoot a PCP for the first time when you're use to springers. Quiet, powerful and accurate . Same thing happened to me I shot my hunting buddy's .22 Rapid, .22 Gladiator and .22 M-rod. I liked how quiet and powerful the M-rod was and I told myself I had to get one lol. Ever since getting my first PCP, I ended up selling a bunch of my nice springers and I'm down to just one...
It only get worst too, I'm expecting an Edgun in .25 cal next week LOL. My friend also just picked up an MK4 too, can't wait to try it when we go squirrel sniping again.

The owner sounds like a nice guy...I wish we had airgun stores around here in Central Illinois. Our nazi-like airgun regulations probably have a lot to do with that. If I had the money I'd open one. Around 400,000 people within a 45 minute drive. Gotta be some airgunners in there. - Im jealous you got to shoot those high end rifles...

The Dark side is to strong to fight. Come join us. You will always be strong with the force. 8)
Besides that, we have cookies! ;D
PCPs are the only thing I shoot now. My half dozen (some even tuned) spring guns are just dust catchers now days. :o
Welcome to the GTA madness.
-
yea they are fun. ;D ;D took a while to get used to the lack of sound. felt like it was barely shooting, until you could put pellet on top of pellet. the marauder would be an excellent choice. its feature rich and shoots good too. the daystate even better if it fits into your budget ;D ;D
-
I have a bulk filled QB, I know thats no Daystate or FWB but I still like my spring gun. Just grab and shoot. The QB is fun though. Gotta get on that HPA boat, though.
-
im hoping to order an mrod from Mac, hopefully in time for my bday in march (waiting on taxes)
-
cool. ;D Happy future Bday. ;D hope you get your mrod. you'll love it. ;D

PCP, springers, small cal, big cal,... it's all good, just different. AG is super fun no matter how you do it! But, your goal should be to have one of everything. ;)

Visiting Jim is not conducive to a fat wallet...and I got two of my three marauders from Jim...:) and sacks ov pellets, and...
Check out the Michigan shooting gate; I have folks over for shooting quite often.
cheers,

This guy was really nice, you know, the kind of guy that you feel that you have known for forever. I actually felt guilty shooting a $2,300 gun, but at 60 feet (it was indoors), 3 shots and 1 hole . . . . was it me shooting?!?!? I have NEVER done this with my Gamo!! I know, the Gamo only cost $250 12 years ago and it is what it is. Oh, I will come to the dark side, it's just a matter of finances, not time. Heck, I may have to sell one of my recumbent bikes to fund the PCP.
What I loved was hearing these guys, coming in for a bench shoot, talking about setting a sugar water bottle 30 yards out and shooting the bees above the bottle. These guys had head shots of dragonflies at 50 yards (they were labeled and taped to a card) . . . a good sized dragonfly, but still. And, seeing what kind of guns they were bringing in . . OH MY GOODNESS $$$$$$. It was really cool for me to see the "Dark Side" you guys speak of.
Is there anything that I should look for if I find something used? Anything to steer clear of? Any information you could send a guy on a budget would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes, it's just one shot.
Had my Nephew over, and he challenged me with an empty Mini-Bic lighter set out at 43 yards.
Break out one gun from the safe, load, fire. Bo do overs, no warm ups, no excuses.
I took out a PCP. Could have been a springer (but they tend to need a few warm-up shots), could have been a co2 gun (but those might have been put away sighted in for 80F, and t0night it's about 40F).
So I took out a PCP. Sometimes, you just shut up and take a “gift”.

One shot, 43 yards, trying to impress a newbie as to why I put up with PCP’s lower shot count and fill gear requiremnts.
Can I center punch a Mini-Bic lighter like this 10 times in a row? No.
But he doesn’t know that. Was suddenly silent after that one and only shot, just kept looking at the lighter...then the gun...and at that point suggested we come inside for a cup of coffee or a beer (his choice).
Certainly did make rise up and accept the challenge.

you did the best thing by going and seeing the guns first hand. holding and shooting them. ask others what they do and dont like about their guns. form a list of priorities and features and go from there. check back and check some other guns as well. ;D i don't think i have seen a "bad" pcp yet. get what you like and can afford, and you'll likely be a happy camper. ;D
@ Ribbonstone that's funny. bet you'll have fun with that one for years to come ;D carry that lighter with you and flash it to him occasionally. lol :D ;D

You will love a PCP, just got my Disco today and I am already in love! This may be my first PCP but it won't be my last!! Save every bit ya can and start out modestly like I did($450 for gun, pump, scope and 2250 pellets) and enjoy!! Problem is, now I am hooked bad and can see spending some more cash on a lot more stuff! Most important have fun, this is a great site and I am a newby to this as well!! Shawn

Hey man, it'$ only money.
If you don't spend it someone else will.
Besides, you never know if you'll wake up tomorrow.
-
I am thankful that I haven't found a store like that yet. I started learning about pcp and I am dying to get my hands on one.
-
PCP AG's are far FAR more addictive than PCP Drugs !
Welcome to the Darkside,... you have been assimilated,... on your first pull of the trigger, you lost all power to resist.
Often, in a store that has a loyal following of customers like that, The shop owner is happy to have a "Customers Used Items/ For sale board". When I walk into a place and see one of those it makes me smile. It makes me think that the shop owner is a cool guy, and not too uptight about grabbing every single dime he can get. It set's a positive "mood" amongst the customers.Iit's a good thing... and customers appreciate it.
check to see if there is anything used within your budget.
I'd buy off a board like that just as easily as from a member here on the classifieds.
I find that when buying used equipment from folks who are into the same thing,... I often end up getting a better deal, with half the accessories already on it, that I'd have bought anyway.
If you don't see anything on the board,... Put up a "WANTED" ad.
you never know, but someone who has been shootin the heads off of Dragon flies at 50 yards with a Daystate,... just may have a Mrod they are prompted into selling when they see your ad.
Just some food for thought.

Tri-5-ron . . I like the way you think. BTW, I just figured out what an Mrod is . . . stupid me.

I DID IT . . . . today I bought a used Marauder at Precision Airguns and Supplies at their spring sale and swap meet, it came with a super comfortable Mad Dog Marauder Erg Dog Short stock. I bought a Hawke Sport - HD Ir 2-7X32 AO scope for it as well. Now all I need is an AIR SUPPLY of some sort . . pump or bottle. I gotta sell some stuff before I buy that though . . . if I only had more funds. Oh well, I'm over half way there and I have a lot to learn.
For starters, I'll be parting with the old Gamo Hunter 890 . . CraigsList here it comes.

My email now includes many notices that go like..."A large purchase has just posted against your account".

"The one that I really remember is the Daystate MK4 . . how could I forget!!! What a dream, I should have never gone in to that store . . . $2,300 for an air gun? "
LOL The same exact thing just recently happened to me. I am now the proud new owner of an FX 500. And couldn't be happier. Welcome to the Darkside Winter!!
