Hey folks, prefer to have a Benjamin 392, but since it is meant for plinking only - also considering cheaper alternatives. But which one ?
Crosman 2100 ? Webley Rebel / Norconia P1 ? Crosman 1377 / 1322 with custom stock ? Other alternatives ?
Your opinion please ;)
-
Crosman 1377 / 1322 would be my choice.
-
Thanks, any particulair reason why ?
..like the picture, great gun though !
-
It's very accurate. If you miss with it it's not the guns fault.
It's a dream to shoot.
Very light.
If you want to mod it, there are almost no limitations to what you can do.
The one in my sig pic is built by Tim at Mac1.

If you mod a 1377/22, you can go from this

To this

True, the mods are endless ! Unfortunatly I have two left hands ;D
Although adding a custom stock and steel breech would be my limit.
-
Go to gun brokers an look for a older crosman 66 the ones without the 5 shot pellet clip. There a great pumper accurate an easy to pump just a little less power then the 2100 but nicer to pump. I have two of them buy far my favorite pumper for the money. Plinks out to 20 yd,s with 4 easy pumps or 3 pumps for 10yd. With mil-dot scope easy to get good accuraccy out 40 yd,s with as little as 6 pumps. They handle really nice.
-
You might want to take a look at the Crosman .22 caliber bug out kit. It comes with a 12" barreled 2289 with shoulder stock, a tin of 500 pellets and backpack, $80 at Academy Sports and Outdoors, or if you want to buy locally, Wallmart has them for $87.

Here are a couple of threads currently running on the Crosman-Benjamin(Sheridan) Gate
asking and discussing many of the same questions you are asking

For mostly plink'n....
You first need to decide which you prefer to plink with. Rifle or Pistol.
A dedicated pumper rifle will be a much better value, ie fun and accuracy for your $$$
A dedicated pistol like the 1377, lots 'o fun, Few $$$, and mod-able, if thats your pleasure.
.... If still waffleing. the 1377 platforn can do both, but...
more $$$ for modificatrions, to get near rifle preformance, if that is your real leaning.
Rifle = Crosman 2100 / Remington AM77 (same gun, different color), Great Value for $$$
If you want to move up to the next level in quality, Benjamin 397 .177 cal. ( accuracy 2100 vs 397, near same)
Why .177 ? if mostly plink'n, cheaper ammo, and more range than .22.
The 392, uses the exact same power plant, so the available power will be the same.. .22 slower/more drop/ft.
= decreased range = decreased plink'n pleasure.......Just MHO.
Pistol = 1377...
.22, ? same ... .177 cheaper ammo and more range...even with mods, .
.22 will always be slower/shorter range than .177 with the same mods.
jMHO
Love my pumpers, rifles and pistols....I mostly plink and shoot paper.
For me , 'best bang for my buck' was getting both platforms in thier designed and engineered forms.
Lots less $$$ spent to get "Plink'n Pleasure" rifle and pistol.
HTH....Have fun....Safely

Thanks all for your advice...!
Crosman 2289 is indeed a nice alternative to consider :P
For the rest, yes, plinking with a rifle is much better (if they still sold the Crosman 2200, the deal was already done), but I prefer the .22 caliber - better impact and I will shoot short range only (max 25 yards). But you gave me some thoughts to consider...
By the way... I have two left hands AND feet ;D

That's tough! ;D

A 392 is for plinking only? Who said so? They must have forgotten to tell the thousands of squirrels and such, that the gun killing them was ONLY a plinker.

-
Sorry..., I will USE it for plinking only ;)
-
Check this one, inexpensive and no mods available so it stays cheap to own http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=3179.msg369676#msg369676 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=3179.msg369676#msg369676)

Hey Brutuz, thanks - I have seen your video already 8) :P, I was even about to buy it, but... it seemed that you can't add a regular Weihrauch or equivalent silencer on it, and I don't have a trigger fetish, but this one looks really horrible ?!
-
Rifle doesn't really need a shush-extention screwed onto the muzzle threads ;)
Trigger isn't bad, triggerguard itself looks a bit "different"...
-
;)
Well, when I was a kid back in the day. A cheap can shooter ( pumper ) was the daisy Powerline 880....Easy to pump and Cheap to shoot ( amo ) Beebe or Pellet...I see tham at Walmart for like 40 bucks $$.

The 392 definitely puts out more ft lbs than the 397 and most certainly is the more capable hunter of the two. As for the Norconia/Webley rebel, for the money I'd rather have the benji 397. For strictly a plinker, out of all the guns you mentioned the 2100 would be my first choice. Can shoot BB's and has a spring loaded magazine for positive feed into the breech, but can still shoot pellets, and has enough power for rabbits and squirrels if you decide to hunt with it. A BB repeater is real nice to have for plinking. 880 is a good one too, we have three- my own and two for my boys. Also capable of taking bunnies humanely, easy to pump, and cheap. The 2100 is a better gun though, just IMHO
-
the Norconia/Webley rebel has a plastic breech , but it does have dovetails on it .

hey-Hey!!!,
I'd go after a rocker safety Sheridan. failing that, the benji 392. the 392 shooting the light JSB 13.4 gr pellet will be quite flat on 5 pumps, and can be flatter still at higher pump count. that the 392 can have its use envelope expanded further than the others is very useful. At some point youcan get totally nuts and get tim at Mac1 to seriously power it up. The sheridans I have with his guts in them can shoot 19 FPE with JSB Exacts, and more than that on heavier pellets.
cheers,
Douglas

The 13xx guns can be set up exactly how you want it then changed the next day to fit what ever you need then. Tons of mods and potential. If its mostly targets the 13xx will handle that and close in hunting. Add a tko break to it and nobody will know what your up too.

Thanks for the answers folks 8)
Where I live in Europa, I can't buy a Daisy 880, looks to much like a "real" rifle... Again the Benjamin is a great, versatile rifle, but it costs 2,5x as much as the Norconia/Webley Rebel or the Crosman 2100.
So my list is getting down to the
Norconia/Webley Rebel
Crosman 2100
Crosman 1322
From a ready out of the box and shoot perspective, I have a slight preference for the 2100 (had previous good experiences with Crosman and the Norconia is unknown for me..), but the 1322 has the preferred caliber (but needs a custom stock to become at least a carabine).
Mmmm... ::)

Feel free to come over and try these
Norconia/Webley Rebel
Crosman 2100
Crosman 1322

Great offer which I can't resist 8)
