Title: Carbon Fiber tank- First Fill?
Post by: USMCSPRINGER on January 06, 2013, 08:15:13 AM
Good day everyone!

Well it arrived today...Joe Brancato's Hammerhead tank (66 CuFt).  I already did some recon at the nearby paintball shop.  Took the tank in and had it filled to 4500 PSI, it took about 15 minutes.  I took tank home went to fill my MRod later that evening only to find that it was now at 4000 PSI.  Is this normal on a complete fill from zero?  Was the tank filled too fast?  Gentlemen at paintball shop said it is normal for tank to get a bit warm during filling (makes sense to me), but I didn't think the pressure would go down that much when it cooled....

thoughts?

as always, thanks in advance!

When a tank is filled from very low pressure to full it generates a fair amount of heat. As that heat dissipates the pressure drops, as you found out.  Your local fill shop should have waited and let it cool down some to get a more complete fill. It will probably get a more complete fill on your next one.

thanks, David!

-that's what I was thinking.  Next time I will have him fill it in stages, maybe drop it off and pick up the next day or so.  The shop was quite busy yesterday, I think he was trying to keep things moving and not have me wait.

Congrats on your new tank.  I need one, badly.  Can I ask what the price was for yours?

You will probably not suffer the same results when having it topped off. I would mention the 4000 psi fill upon my return though.

Congrats on the new fill setup. Joes stuff is top quality and his great white is on my short list.

i fill my own 30 minute tank from my large nitrogen tank. i get about 100 psi drop when cool. but then again i go kinda slow. i have never had it lose 500 psi. ;D guess its possible, but i dont fill mine that fast. even me going slow enough to only lose 100 psi only takes me maybe a minute to actually fill. ;D just my .02 ;D

I paid $674 out the door...that's for a 66 cu ft tank (with 2" working pressure gauge and tank pressure gauge), micro hose, tank protector sleeve, handle and shipping.

My first fill at the local paintball shop cost me $35.  By my calculations, I will get about 40 fills out of it.  I am keeping track of my fills-we'll see.  I am not sure how far down until the pressures are equal- time will tell.

The tank is used, but was just hydro'd in December and will be good for another 5 years, total tank life of 15 years.

At first I had a hard time with the cost of a tank.....until I had to pump my MRod up repeatedly...nice to have the Hill pump as a backup, but I do love the tank so far!

I agree- Joe's stuff is top-quality.  Great guy, too!

-especially when you forget the three-hour time difference and call him at 6 am....

sorry Joe...   ;D

I never did verify the shop's attendant reading of 4500 psi, we were too busy talking about how badly he wanted an MRod..   ::)

Not until later that night on the cold garage floor did I take note of the PSI....

*learning has occurred*

the dive shop i get my tanks filled at, filled my 44cf way to fast. so i mentioned it yesterday when i dropped of my new 88cf tank. asked to get as close to 4500 as they can when its cooled off and to fill it slowly as not to over heat this tank..

so i drop mine off and go back the next day (today) tank is at 4400, cool as can be and ready to go.. they apologized for over heating the last tank and it was a 50/50 thing, neither of us knew better.. so they discounted me 5 bucks off the 10 dollar fill this time to make up for it..

gotta move this over to the pcp support equipment sub gate

$35.00 ouch, my local dive shop fills my great white for $7.00. If i had to pay that i'd look into getting a shoebox compressor. If there are any local dive shops near by or you local firestation might or could fill for less.

That does seem kind of high. My local scuba shop filled my 17cu/ft cf tank to 4500psi for $5.00

I heard that....in the beginning I justified by thinking $1 a fill.... I have one place left to see if they will fill my tank, a local dive shop.  Some of the paintball places here charge by the cubic inch ($9 for 70 ci).  Either way, it is still almost $40......

I am still on my first tank fill, I was in a hurry to get going with the chrony testing for the MRod.  For my next fill I will ask the local dive shop....

If you are still active duty you may want to make friends with the boys at the base firehouse. If they have an airfield at your base go talk to the boys at Crash, Fire, Rescue.

Be warned though. They have two types of air there. One is compressed, the other is just hot air :) (We rescue folks are full of hot air...I mean stories, Sometimes they are even true).

Excellent point- on both counts!!

actually attended a promotion ceremony for a buddy of mine on Friday.  He was crash, fire rescue...now he is an 8999- First Sergeant.

I drive by a at least two fire stations en route to work.....I have to make it a point to stop and ask...

I really need to make contact with another PCP owner who is local...I am willing to bet I am not the first in need of HPA for my rifle...

Finally made it to the local scuba shop...great experience!  The gentlemen there said, "I was wondering when someone was going to bring one of those carbon fiber tanks".

good conversation and lots of attention from his two little bulldogs....$6 later, I was out the door with 4400 PSI.....

Paintball shop and $36 no more....geez.....

I have no experience with tanks so why not chill the tank beforehand so it can fill faster without worry of heat?

when i was younger, i worked in a dive shop. we filled the bottles in a large tub of water. the water provided sufficient cooling to allow the fill to proceed at a decent rate without heating up too much and it also allowed for immediate identification of any air leakage. i always assumed this was standard fare for dive shops.

No. I worked at two different shops and one filled in water, the other didn't. It's pretty much up to the shop.

Cause cold to hot means condensation. Not good inside an air tank or your airgun.

Oh, I forgot that this is the "Tank" thread.

Because the guys in the tank would probably get POed at you and shoot you with there really big gun. ;) Tanks are for the Army.

However if you are referring to cylinders for storing compressed gases. The effects would be minimal for the amount of work you put into it.
