Title: Found an R7
Post by: Nikoman on January 05, 2013, 02:51:33 AM
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted share my latest craigslist find with all of you.
And I thought I was done with German air rifles! ;D ;D
It's a Beeman R7, old school style. I picked it up a couple of nights ago from someone who never used it. According to the seller, it was his father in law's rifle, he passed away and he never fired it :(
From the looks of it, it's brand spanking new. It was wrapped in the plastic and still in the original box.
I Chrony'd it about an hour ago and it's a hot one. It hit 700fps avg with JSB RS's and it spit out H&N Match (wadcutters) at a healthy avg of 666fps. It shoots slightly on the harsh side compared to my other R7, which was Vortek'd BTW to get these kind of numbers this thing is getting stock ;D
The accuracy remains to be seen, I won't have time for the next couple of days to try it out on targets. There will be an R7 shootout, they'll be shooting for a Leupold scope - the winner gets the Leupy. ;)
Here'a a pic, it's no looker by any means, it looks like any average R7 out there which is fine by me as long as it's a shooter.
The funniest part was the first shot, it actually recoiled!! Imagine that, an R7 that recoils!! Muhahahaha! ;D ;D
I'll post better pics in the near future along with some targets (if it's not a stinker).

Thanks, everyone!
I just found out today that my plain Jane, R7 is really brand spanking new on the inside too. She's dieseling like a brand new gun and it smells like a new gun ;D
The best part was finding out that it isn't pellet picky in the least. It shot 4 different pellets with pretty much same results, scary accurate!
At 20 yards it even single-holed a five shot group after I changed scopes. I forgot which pellet it was but so far it's doing great with JSB Exacts 8.44, JSB Express 7.87gn, JSB RS 7.33gn and H&N FTT's.

Here's the group of the day with the JSB 8.44's, some other groups weren't much bigger.

Very nice Nikoman.  Great find.  That new R7 is in good hands now, and you are already spoiling it.  It looks like you two are bonding nicely and that R7 is going to do everything you ask of it.  ;D  I wonder if groups will tighten up once its broken in!  ;D

;D ;D
The funny part is I zeroed in for one pellet and most of them just needed a little windage adjustment here and there. The FTT's were DEAD ON center mast.

This gun is so terrible, I think I need to sell it to Derrek ;D
And the price was MUCH cheaper than the average used R7.

Nikoman, sorry....but in your 1st post you said if it's not a stinker.  Well, it is.  I'm real sad about this.  But 700fps is not very good.  You're better off to send it back to Weihrauch, OK?

Hey, I have an idea!

Yep, I'll gladly help you.  Send it over and forward the thing into better hands.  You deserve much better.

 ;D

You guys are too kind, Robert. ;D
Everyone is so concerned for this rifle being so bad for me, I should consider giving it away. ;D
I think Calmark was first in line since he's coming over to see it this Saturday.
He might not want it with this terrible Leupold scope ;D ;D

Niko, you can keep that Leupold scope.  I just want that R7!  It definitely seems to be a great shooter and its barely even started to get broken in.  We could work out a deal where I do that hard work breaking it in for you up at my place.  You can get it back after about a dozen tins or so.  ;D

So I can keep the scope, huh? Is that why you say "I forgot how nice and clear these EFR scopes are", every time you look through one! ;D ;D

I'll try and get an outdoor shot in the sun (if we ever see the sun again out here) ;D ;D

Well, a few days ago I got to meet Nikoman's new R7, and I mean it was flawless and definitely never used.  He got really lucky finding a nice R7 in a time capsule like that.  It smoked about every shot and you would get a strong whiff of smoke and could blow it right out the barrel.  No wonder this rifle is shooting so hot.  It has lots of fuel from the factory lubes to burn off still.  We chronyed it vs. my San Rafael R7 that has a Vortek kit, and his in stock form was shooting the same pellets 5-10 fps faster than mine with the new spring kit.   :o

Its definitely a hot one, and also very accurate.  It seems to like any pellet we used in it, from Crosman Premier lights, Crosman pointed, and the other domes Nikoman had already tested.  While mine is also accurate, it doesn't shoot all pellets about equally like this one does.

Oh, and we had an informal shoot out between me shooting this R7 and Nikoman shooting his TX200HC in .177.  This is rested right on the bag, 5 shots at 20 yards.  R7 on the top and TX200 on the bottom.  ;D  The other targets are from my HW50 which I'm trying to get good behavior out of.

My 10yr-old daughter shot this R7 for the first time this afternoon. Here's her first 5 shots ever with it.
Yeah, I'm proud. ;)

Nice group for a first timer. Pretty soon you will be buying "pink" AG's.

Not sure about that yet, she really likes camo and dark colors, LOL!

Wanted to give everyone an update on the Precious R7 (Mark gave her this name, LOL).
The little rifle is breaking in nice and slow. Easy does it is the motto here but the little monster has picked up some velocity and is now in the 8+fpe range. Shooting well into the 700's.
The accuracy is no joke, she can group every pellet brand we put through her and she smacks the targets with extreme prejudice. ;D
Here's some ten shot groups at 20 yards with five different pellets.
Nasty little thing!

One more thing, here's a FT squirrel that my wife and I shot with the R7. This is with the smallest kill zone disc attached (3/8"). This is what the squirrel looked like after 120 shots. Notice how not a single pellet hit the squirrel on the body.
I managed to hit the squirrel 10 shots in a row before missing and then another 9 in a row before missing again.
My wife never shot this gun and she stepped right up and dropped the squirrel 3 times in a row and then quit because it was too easy. ;D

MY PRECIOUS!!!

Now that is how an R7 is supposed to shoot.  Not pellet-fussy in the slightest and a consistent POI.  Any real squirrel out there better watch out.  Anybody in your family who takes aim at his furry hide is going to nail him.

I keep mentioning how that R7 would like to stretch its legs out to 50 yards at my place.  But noooo, I think the "Precious" has Nikoman bent to its will.  ;D

I need one of those squirrels!  Nice shooting!

Here's my R7 target.

(edited 1/9/17 to remove broken links)

It was too easy hitting the spinners so I drilled holes in them.  The small holes are 3/16" (.187) and the large holes are 15/64" (.234).

The .177 R7 has no trouble with the 15/64" holes out to about 10 yards and the 3/16" holes are a challenge even at 5 yards.  A good shot will barely move it.  A great shot looks like a miss--no movement.

The R7 is a blast because even in a small space you can enjoy the accuracy and push yourself.   BTW, the 3/16" holes hold a plastic cap gun cap perfectly so a great shot makes a nice bang with no movement.

And mine shoots even better since I dressed her up.  Or maybe it's just that I pay more attention to her :)

Wow nice stuff, Jerry!! 8)
The squirrel FT is really nice, especially since you don't have to get up to reset it ;D
I put mine out 20 yards with the 3/8" sized kill zone disc on it. They come with multiple sized discs to set the kill zones. I have a few of these and it's really fun to set them out to 50 yards. You'd be amazed with how these little guns can do some damage way out there. ;)
These FT's seem to be out of stock at most places, I've been wanting to pick up more of these so I can have several set up at once since pulling the string can get very tedious for me at times ;D ;D

Thanks Niko!  It's amazing how fun these little rifles are.  It sounds like yours was an especially good find.  I'm glad it worked out that way for you.  It sounds like you need some smaller kill zones for your targets --  1/4" or 3/16"?  :)
