Hi Guys. I just finished building my Silent Trap ( a how-to build along coming soon). Well it was very late in the night when I finished and I just had to try it out. So I got out 12 diff. types of pellets and fired them into the trap out in the garage. I looked at the penetration of them. All the skirts where between 1/4 and 1/2in below the surface. The putty is approx. 1 3/4" thick. I then carefully as I could, dug them out and cleaned them off. Some of the skirts show a small smashed spot where i grabbed them with the pliers I took pics of them all with a new pellet next to them for comparison. Top, side and rear views. When i went to crop the pics for upload i realized I had the camera setting on a low resolution, so the pics are a little grainy. I realize this is not the same a ballistic jell, but it was still fun and informative.I’m using a stock TalonSS @ power setting #6. with a Talon Tune Shrowd. fired at about 4 in from the putty.
After thinking about it, I'll have to do this again and measure each ones penetration depth.

Were they all the same weight after they were retrieved?

Nice comparo. Even though it's not ballistic gel or anything resembling animal skin and bone, it still gives you an idea of how each pellet will expand. Actually with ballistic gel, the pellets do not expand nearly as much. I think your test was better with the duct seal, if your goal was to see the expansion capabilities of each pellet.
Now imagine shooting at 4-5" thick duct seal with a Condor .22 at 50-65fpe. The more power, the more the pellets deform and/or expand.

Dixie,
I did not weigh each pellet, I wrote the weight printed on each pellet tin. I don't think they lost enough lead measure between rubbing on the barrel and the putty. they did retain a small amount of the putty that I could not wipe off.
Harry, I don't have a Condor, yet! but today I was thinking about getting a few more pounds of the putty , turning my gun up all the way and firing a few shots into it. Yes, i wanted to see how the pellets expanded. I really kinda like the Barracuda Hunter Extreme Hollow points. I have been thinking for a while that I'd like to take a single sided razorblades and cut the notches just a bit deeper and see if I get more expansion. It's hard to see in the pics, but in person you can really see the 4 notches after compression. this would probably change the flight characteristics on longer shots.
I like the knockdown power of the Eunjin's..... Now If I can just find a heavy hollowpoint........

The Baracuda Hunter HP is similar to the Beeman Crow Magnum 18.2gr. The ones I have recovered were totally flat with 0.32" diameter.
Why do you need a heavy hollow point? Domed pellets are more accurate and make the best hunting pellets. HP pellets also do not penetrate as deep, although they are fine for body/vitals shots on squirrels and small rabbits, birds, etc. at shorter distances. Shot placement (head/brain on fur) is the key, especially with medium-sized small game.
