I went by Steve Corcoran's shop again yesterday to drop off some wood and plan my next stock. I was looking at his cool little HW50S Sporter stock. I took my own action with me so I could drop it in his stock and see how it fit with the scope. Steve put the action in the stock and it didn't fit and he did one of those "oh yeah" that means he knew was the problem was immediately.
He showed me his action and my action. His has a little bushing on the front stud where the stock screw attaches. He then picked up my factory stock and pointed out that the inlet they cut for that stud is at least 1/8" larger in diameter than the stud. This means there is a *bunch* of slop in the fit that doesn't need to be there and one of the reasons you have to torque that stupid front stock screw down so tight to keep the stock in place. He popped one of the bushings onto my action and it snapped right into his stock with no play. He also gave me a bushing to keep.
He found them at Home Depot. The OD is 1/2" and the ID appears to be around 3/8". The part he found is thick so he cuts them down. I installed mine this afternoon and sanded the thickness down to the exact height of that stud so it seats all the way into the stock. Now when I put the action into the stock it just snaps in and there is no front to back movement even before I install the screw. It's a great way to eliminate slop, save wear on your stock, and prevent overtightening of that stock screw all at the same time.
I don't know if others have figured this out and posted about it but I did a search and didn't see anything.
Here are some photos:
(edited 1/9/17 to remove broken links--I've attached the images at the end of the post.)
The stud on the action for the front stock screw:
The inlet in the stock:
The bushing being test fit. Please note that this is NOT the final fit. It's sitting too high and needed to be sanded down about 1/16" to make it flush with the top of the stud:
The first stock was one of the new checkered style HW50S stocks but the older smooth style has the same problem. Here's a smooth style stock showing the same oversized hole:
If someone else already figured this out and posted the solution my apologies and hats off to you. I just haven't seen anything until Steve pointed it out to me.

No need to apologize. Good tips are worth repeating now and then. But I don't recall ever seeing this one either.

I think it's an easy fix that makes it so you don't have to have Popeye forearms to keep your stock from moving around.
I'll hunt for the part next time I'm at Home Depot and post the SKU.

Look in the small parts bins for nylon spacers.
