Title: Question about QB 78 scope rail
Post by: howie1968 on December 10, 2012, 01:00:15 PM
I have a question about QB scope rail on all the 11mm rings i see they all have a stop pin in them, does the qb 78 have a stop pin hole? if not if i get a ring with a stop pin will it mount ok i cant seem to find rings that dont have the stop pin

The QB78, being either CO2 or HPA, doesn't have the harsh dual recoil of a springer or gas piston so I wouldn't worry about it.   Just clean the threads of oil with a solvent, apply some blue threadlocker, torque them down and enjoy shooting it!

Rings with the stop are fine, just remove or back them all the way out. No loctite is needed nor is there a need to torque the mounts.

wont the stop pin interfere with it fitting flush? correct me if i am wrong because on the other 11 mm rails i seen that has the stop hole the stop pin goes into the hole.  wouldnt that make my back ring sit higher then the front ring therefor making my scope point down?

You should be able to remove the pin from the ring, or as was said, back it off so it doesn't interfere with mounting.  No need whatsoever on any CO2 guns. RC

11mm and 3/8" scope dovetails ARE NOT THE SAME THING!!!! 11mm and 3/8" do not equate... 11mm is almost exactly 7/16".... 3/8" (.375) equals 9.5mm....

The only 'Standardized' specification for scope mounting bases is the MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny specification developed at the Picatinny Arsenal. It was developed from what has been the 'most' standardized base up until now the Weaver style base.

There are both dovetails that measure a nominal 3/8" at the throat and dovetails that measure a nominal 11mm/7/16" at the throat. There are other dovetails with different advertised dimensions.

MOST TipOff or Dovetail rings will fit both 3/8" and 11mm dovetails. MOST TipOff rings have a 'foot' that clamps the ring to the dovetail. On most TipOff rings the 'foot' is reversible so the rings will sit more centered on either base. If you mount your rings without a scope with one foot on one way and the foot on the other ring the other way you should be able to see with your naked eye which ring sits more centered  over the bore axis.

The only rings that I have tried to use on an 11mm base that would not work and did not have a reversible foot were from B-Square.... At least one manufacturer (I think it is Burris) actually supplies an extra foot to facilitate proper mounting for either base...

Others may have not made it clear. If your rings use a threaded stop either remove it or back it out enough to properly mount the ring. If it has a smooth pin simply grab it securely with a plier and pull it out.... Greg

kind of confused, will the 3/8 work and not cause accuracy issues or do i need the 11mm to get the best accuracy

11mm =  0.433"
3/8" = 0.375"

They're generally interchangeable.

MOST TipOff  (dovetail) rings will work on MOST airgun/rimfire dovetail bases. As outlined above if possible you SHOULD experiment with the 'mounting foot' to optimize the ring mounting position....

As far as accuracy goes consider the M1 Garand Sniper rifle..... The scope was actually mounted off to the side....Greg

Both rings sets below are available on amazon for less than $10.

AccuShot Premium Mid-Profile Airgun .22 Ring for 1-Inch Scope
AccuShot Premium Hi-Profile Airgun .22 Ring for 1-Inch Scope

They are made by Leapers/UTG and are of very good quality.  Don't let the low price disuade you.  Both have 4 screws on the rings and two on each mount and both have scope stop pins.  I've got a pair on my QB78 and Gamo Big Cat and they work just fine.  The pin is short enough to back out without protruding from the top ofthe bottom ring for the QB78.  As others have said, you can also always remove it completely.    I didn't, because I know I'd lose it if I did.  On the Big Cat, I use the scope stop pin.  They are very secure.

The Mid-Profile is good for up to 32mm objective scopes.  Get the Hi-Profile mounts for 40mm or 50mm objective scopes.  The mid-profile may work with a 40mm scope, but won't leave you much room between barrel and scope to slide a scope cap over the objective.

The rings feature "Reversible Locking Plate to Fit Full Range of Airgun/.22 Rails".  I've seen them variously described as 3/8 and/or 11mm.  Most 3/8 rings will work fine on a QB78 11mm rail.  Flip the locking plate around to get the closest fit.  I've not flipped the plate around properly before, and that works fine also.  There is just a little more "air" between the plate and the rail.  A QB78 does not recoil.  Either way is plenty secure.

You mighta made the right choice with the high mounts, over the medium.  Especially if you use flip up covers, like the Butler Creeks. No fingernail scratch wear.
The Accushots is all I use, and they work just fine.

i feel better now Mike, the new centerpoint that i got the 4X16X40 AO ir came with flip up lens covers i like this scope i want to put it on the xl 1100 but   she is already shooting great and it would make a heavy gun that much heavier so ill put this on the  177 i get tomorrow, then my other 22 will be here early in the week once i play with these ill give a couple to my daughters then i think im getting a PCP of some sort going to look at them real hard the next 2 months before i make a decision as for now ill have 4 to keep me busy
