Title: crossman 1377 for indoor pest control....need more knockdown power.
Post by: Christopher A Bales on November 10, 2012, 11:39:22 PM
Longest shot.....probably 15 yards. pellets....jsb exact rs. Chronos @ 533.

Here lies the problem. The thing is light, accurate as all get out with the stock on it, and it doesn't damage buildings, however I can knock down pigeons and sparrows with it but I have to finish everything off when it gets on the ground. Not the way I like to hunt.

The question is, can I REASONABLY give this thing some more juice without sacrificing accuracy? Or do I just run magnums in my G1 Extreme or get a youth springer with a little more snot.

Thanks

yep
you can increase the velocity and accuracy will not suffer

I find that shot placement is the key to one shot DRT. An accurate shot to the CNS usually is the end of most critters, occasionally there is a super rat that takes a heart lung finisher.
The usual flat top mods and poly port will get you up to ~600 @ 10-11 pumps and if you lighten the valve spring a little it will dump more air so you can pump higher too. Don't modify the size of the exhaust port in the valve on a .177 but think about smoothing the flow.....Your results may vary.
The 1377 is a great pester for close range.

Flat top piston and valve cheap from mellonair (site in the GTA mall)

Add a Benjamin discovery hammer spring that you can get directly from Crosman for very cheap, you wont lose any accuracy and will get more power.

Longer barrel is another option, you get roughly about 10FPS for every inch of barrel length you add.

Modify the accuracy of the 1377, get the 14" long barrel

1. Lighter trigger spring for more accuracy, this cost me $.99 local ace hardware. This makes a really nice shooter
2. Trigger job, & 22LR cartridge case, cost nothing, 15 minutes or less

Or

Convert to .22

or

and get a Crosman 1322, .22 cal, larger caliber would also have more take down power,

Accuracy can always be increased, better shot placement may be all you need.

Options,

1.  14" barrel, for higher velocity, More power in shorter and longer distances, i think my 14" barrel was $12.00
2.   Lighter trigger spring for accuracy, this cost me $.99 local ace hardware. This makes a really nice shooter
3.  Trigger job, & 22LR cartridge case, cost nothing, 15 minutes or less
4.  Steel breech for accuracy/durability

You can mix and match from the list. add some or none.

Wait.   It's a 1377.   He needs to get a Crosman 2100.  It has a bit more power, the longer barrel, and so on.  His optimal choice would be a 2200, but they stopped making them a few years ago (22 cal version of the 2100).  Modifying his current pistol is a bit silly, considering what it is.

The other option if noise isn't a problem  is to get a 2240 for $60.  It's a small game destroyer and is modifiable to no end.  Just a basic model would be sufficient in his case.  The advantage is that it is quick and quiet since there's no pumping.  The downside is it uses CO2.  I guarantee small birds will simply drop when they are hit with it, even with a body shot.

Why is it silly? From Crosman's parts department barrels are under $15 I hear, don't know how much getting a flat top piston and valve would be but that would be enough to gain over 100fps over stock with the right barrel...

I paid i think it was $12 for a 14" long barrel.

I like my 1322, But i agree the 2240, CO2 version is quicker, No Pumping

Full power, Follow up shots are much faster with the 2240,

The 2240 (is a .22cal Pistol) with a 14" long barrel, steel breech, Rear Peep sight, & TKO muzzle break, to make it quiet, and the carbine rifle stock, is really hard to beat for close range pest control.

Adding a longer barrel will increase the fps without more pumping....

Going to .22 cal will reduce the velocity but increase the FPE at the same number of pumps....

DON'T hog out the ports in .177 cal.... but in .22 cal you can make some gains by going larger....

Adding a Flat-Topped Piston and Valve will reduce the number of pumps for a given velocity or increase the velocity for a given number of pumps.... It will also give you the ability to pump the gun to the point it will retain air (at about 14 pumps with stock springs)....

Changing the hammer spring to a stiffer one will NOT increase the velocity below 10 pumps.... However, it WILL allow you to pump more without retaining air, thereby achieving a higher velocity and energy.... You have to ask yourself how much you want to pump....
