Title: Afternoon at the range.
Post by: Rescue35 on November 10, 2012, 06:47:22 PM
So we have some lovely weather this weekend. It is currently 75 degrees outside  with a 5-7 mph breeze from the South. Its OK because my range runs South to North. I decided it was the perfest day to not do chores and instead, see if the new Shoebox compressor could keep up. It did.

I broke out the P'rod because the POI was off. I also wanted to swap scopes on the .22 M'rod. Tangent... Centerpoint changed there 4-16x40 scope. It no longer has the adjustable and locking "tactical" turrets. Instead it has caps. I will not be fooled again Crosman!

I figured as long as I was out I would try various pellets again as well as adjust both a little. The P'rod was still at factory settings and the M'rod had been turned up for hunting. I upped the power on the P'rod and lowered it on the M'rod.  This made both more consistent and gave me a better shot count with smaller spread on the M'rod.

My set up.

My range. 26 yards from here. I can max it out to 35 if shooting from inside the garage.

First up was the Pistol Marauder. It is set up as a carbine with the factory stock and a Centerpoint 3-9x32 scope that came with a Storm break barrel.

Pellet testing. Left to right are JSB Jumbo Heavy 18.13 gr (562 fps), H&N Crow Mag 18.21 gr (550 fps), and Predator Polymags 16 gr (572 fps).

Now that we know the JSBs are the best here is 5, 4 shot groups.

And the Chrony string that corisponds to the targets above, counter clockwise.

Now that I know it is dead on I refile it and put it away. I was slightly disaponted that the Predators didn't do any better, since this was the gun I bought them for.

On to the Marauder .22.

First I sighted in the new scope (green circle) then I shot 10 rounds of it's favorite pellets into one group (red circle).

As long as I have all of the pellets out and  plenty of air, might as well give them a try.

The Barucudas and Predators did OK. Its favorite is still the JSB Heavy 18 grains. I need to buy stock in that company.
Note the "rainbow" of the crow mags. From left to right that is how the shot.

Yes, a dime barly covered the JSB Heavy group.

I then took some chrony data to determine the balistic coeficent of the JSBs. After that I tethered to my tank and loaded some of the less desirable pellets for some plinking time. The barracudas knocked over my spinner and the monsters took a lot of pecans out of the trees.

I was only half way through this post when my Shoebox kicked off. I need to order a lot more pellets.

Thanks,

The spotting scope is a cheap 20-60x barska. It gets the job done.

Mr. Rescue35 how long does it take to refill your AR with the shoebox? I've seen video where it takes several minutes to refill.

I don't know. I've never filled a gun directly. I have several small SCBA "escape" bottles. One of which you can see in my first picture by the table legs. I've never really timed it but it takes about 4 hours to fill from 0 - 3500 psi and about 45 minutes to top it off from 2600 to 3500.

On a side note I have noticed that my guns gauges are off significantly compared to the tank gauge. The Marauder reads about 400 psi low. I trust the tank gauges accuracy however I do reference the guns gauge for shooting performance data as that gauge will always be with the gun.
