Title: Who knows the best .22 and .25 PCP See more inside
Post by: CurmudgeInn on November 10, 2012, 05:33:16 PM
Okay everyone.  Who knows the best .22 and .25 pcp.  Must have good power be able to shoot to around 100 yards and have a good amount of air so I would not have to fill it up every 10 to 20 shots.  Be fairly quiet or easily be made quieter.  Price is not a big issue.  Looking forward to your replies.

Sound like you need an FX rifle or maybe one of the high end Evanix rifles. Both are on my wish list.

I almost had a Disco last week to mess around with.  I missed the sale by a day.  I then started thinking that I want something that can go further and hit harder and get more shots per fill.  I like the FX Royal 500 and a few of the Daystates.  I have seen on youtube that the edgun can get a good amount of shots per fill too but they are just to hard to get a hold of.  I want to get everyones in put now and do a lot of research over the next few months.  I should be ready to buy what I want around mid Jan.

If it were me and wanted Shear power, Large air storage and still have a weapon that looked like a conventional gun .....

Strong contender in .25 cal would be: https://www.pyramydair.com/product/evanix-windy-city-ii-pcp-air-rifle?m=2876:ac=m/Evanix_Windy_City_II_PCP_air_rifle/2876/5589 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/evanix-windy-city-ii-pcp-air-rifle?m=2876:ac=m/Evanix_Windy_City_II_PCP_air_rifle/2876/5589)

I looked at that one on Pryamydairs site.  The chart shows that it FPS drops pretty fast after 15 to 20 shots.  If you click on the last picture then go ahead a number fore pictures it shows the chart.

Only practical way your going to get LONG FLAT shot strings under pretty high power is BUYING gun with ... Or adding Regulation.

I own a FX gladiator mark II in .25 and have no complaints. 100 plus shots per fill, very quiet and very accurate. It isn't cheap but it's fit and finish is perfect and it's smooth side lever action feels like its riding on ball bearings.

100 yards is a very long distance for an air gun. You may want to look at something a little larger then .25. If your dead set on this caliber then there are many guns that could fit your bill. Some of them are the Daystate Air Ranger 50 FPE version. Another is the FX 500 Royale.
Another one you may want to look in to is the new .30 caliber FX Boss. These are just a few suggestions.

Dave beat me to the recommendation of the Daystate!  Expensive, yes!  Does it fit your bill, you bet.  Now Dave has me curious to the .30 caliber Boss!

Not sure what your shooting at 100yds? But .22 FX cyclone does a good job for me on targets with no wind and is quiet.  This is on my wish list and may work for you...  http://web.steyr-sportwaffen.at/hunting/en/hunting-weapons/steyr-hunting-5 (http://web.steyr-sportwaffen.at/hunting/en/hunting-weapons/steyr-hunting-5)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxw8W5_6IYY#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxw8W5_6IYY#ws)

I would suggest you check out workinmanva. He sells custom builds. Check out his site then call him.

My disco ain't done, but from what I have done. I can reach out to 120 yards. I wouldn't count on the pellet to carry much power at that distance, but still fun to go long range with the AG.

Regulator on a disco? I've looked at them, but looks like you lose a lot of power. Been wantin' to see if a regulator  added to a beefed up disco would do it good or bad? Anyone?

Sounds to like your are looking for a gun with a regulator. At the yardage consistency is key when shot count is important. The Fx models come with regs installed as a option, there is the Daystate Airwolf, and the Rapids all come in both caliber. I have a FX500 and I can fill to 250 bar and get around 80 to 90 shots at 45 fpe. Beware it is very addictive, Goodluck.

Thanks for all replies guys.  I am now looking into a number of AG that you all talked about.  I really like the looks of both Daystate and FX air guns.  A few of you asked about the range I want.    I like long range target shooting and hunting small game.  I also want to know I can take larger game at closer ranges.  Optimally I would like between 40 to 80 shots per fill. I have scuba tanks so no worries about pumping for the larger cylinder guns.  :-)

You mentioned quiet as well.
My Air Arms S510 .22 is quiet. I get thirty good shots with it and can get fifty shots at 30 yards. I pop squirrels at 70 yards with the Hawke Varmint SF 4-16X44 scope.
No rifle does it all, but the S510 touches all your criteria.

A regulated FX500 will get you 70 shots and decent accuracy.  Or the FX Gladiator that would get you 100 shots.  WOUld be my high shot count 45FPE choice. I have the 500 and a 50 FPE AIr Ranger. YOu will get 30-40  shots out of  the AIr ranger in ,25 depending on Power and acceptable spread. My Regualted FX500 will stay in a 15PFS spread over all 70 shots. :D

I would defiantly recommend the Edgun .25 long, but its going to be hard to get, it gets 60+ shots & its very accurate.

My 2nd recommendation would be the FX Elite.

Do you have to put the regulator on or will the seller do it for you?  I have heard that FX guns are pretty easy to work on.  is this true?

I don't know if a scuba tank is going to work for you unless it is a high pressure one, more than 3000 PSI. On the guns you are talking about, 3000 PSI isn't going to cut it because these guns use 3000+ PSI as a starting pressure and a 3000 PSI tank wont even fill them once. If you haven't done so already, go to http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/ (http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/) and then scroll down to "Tanks". There you will find a tank calculator and you'll see what I'm talking about. If your scuba tank is a high pressure one, then please disregard this post. If not, then get ready to spend some more money for a carbon fiber tank, http://www.airtanksforsale.com/ (http://www.airtanksforsale.com/) and then you'll need a way to fill it. You can take the tank to a paintball shop and hope they will fill it to 4500 PSI, maybe, maybe not. Or you can get your own high pressure compressor, http://www.shoeboxcompressor.com/ (http://www.shoeboxcompressor.com/) . As you can see, this hobby gets very expensive. I've really got into it a few months ago and have about 6-$7000.00 invested with a few nice guns and the infrastructure to make them work. Like it has been said many times, it is addictive.

Yes, you could and I'm sure some folks do, use a hand pump to fill their guns, but unless you plan on getting a Benjamin Discovery that uses 2000 PSI I wouldn't advise it unless you are in good shape. I used my Benjamin pump twice to fill my Elite 10 to 2900 PSI and it nearly killed me. I prefer to shoot my guns and not sweat all over them with a racing heartbeat.

You order the reg with the gun for a few hundred more. They install it for you. Pretty sure they will not sell you a reg separately.

Also as was mentioned a 3000 psi scuba tank wont go far when filling a 3300-3600 psi gun. Your gonna need a 4500 SCBA tank, and a big one at that.

A regulated FX500 will get you 70 shots and decent accuracy.  Or the FX Gladiator that would get you 100 shots.  WOUld be my high shot count 45FPE choice. I have the 500 and a 50 FPE AIr Ranger. Getting filled is not a problem.  When I pick a gun to get I will also get CF 4,500 PSI tank.  I am in pretty good shape despite a back injury from a car wreck.  I figured I could use a scuba tank to fill as much as I can and then top off with a 4,000+ psi tank.  Can this be done?

Yes but its not going to give you many fills on a gun with a 500cc tanks

I think what's called for is a cascade set up. It takes two tanks. Both are connected to the rifle fill port and bleeder is closed. Low pressure tank valve is opened and fills rifle to its pressure. First tank is closed and second tank fills the rifle to the desired pressure. Usually done with a pair of CF tanks, and you rotate filling them as one drops near the bottom of the rifle's pressure.

With my airhog Marauders I just shoot the tank down to 3k or so psi and then tether it, and shoot off the CF tank. Seems to last forever...:) Can't hunt with it that way though...but I rarely take many shots on a hunt anyway.
cheers,
Douglas

1.Large $.
2.Big air volume.
3.Regulated.

Because of #2, are going to need to add an air tank ( a 4500psi one if you don't want to run back to the air filler every week), transfer equipment, and a good mount n scope.

But you don't mention what you'll be shooting at 100yards.  If it's just targets, have done some mighty good work with less powerful/more hand-pump friendly small volume guns (which makes more sense to me as that's the only time shot count really comes into serious consideration).   If it's typical small game (squirrels and such), then accuracy before power.  But if it's larger critters, may not be able to get that kind of power AND that shot count all that easily.

Dive tanks are easy for me to get filled.  I have 3 dive shops with in 5 minutes of my house.  I also have 2 paintball shops that can fill to 4500psi with in 10 minutes.  As to why 100yards.  I like long distance shooting and I would like to know if I have my crosshairs on a critter at that range I want to be sure I have that power to take it cleanly and humanely.  A lot of critters in my area will not let you get closer than 50 yards before they get out of town.

Make sure those paint ball shops will fill the large tanks to 4500 psi. Most paint ball tanks are much much smaller and some shops won't fill the large 4500 psi tanks.
