Title: The long awaited carbine thread (lots of pictures not 56k friendly)
Post by: MustangMike on October 30, 2012, 09:48:51 PM
so i think ive settled on a name for the carbine

the Sikes Hunter Carbine

kind of suits it i think

as most of you know i have been having a custom carbine built for me. this carbine is a mix of a disco and a crosman custom shop 2400kt.i received it back from lloyd after darrell worked his magic cera kote on it. there is still some things about the carbine i dont know about because i basically turned lloyd loose on it.. he had the goals i wanted for the carbine and the rest was up to him to decide about... he paid such attention to detail that the parts on the carbine i had no decision in making matched and flowed with the rest of the carbine.

lloyd took a stock disco tube and valve, chopped the tube down and did some extensive mods to the valve. other then porting it out and extending the face of the valve to plug the hole for the gauge from crosman im not entirely sure what was done. im sure with a double tube and the proper tuning with the various springs lloyd sent me and a good accurate heavy pellet i could very easly reach 6 shots at 50fpe in 22cal.
im going to post some pictures lloyd made of the chrony strings with the carbine.. they were shot using different setups but shows the wide range of power options i have this carbine.

now on to the finish, darrel did a excellent job shooting the cera kote on the carbine. i went with a tactical grey and matte black scheme on it, i wanted something stealthy that turned heads but still had a clean look to it. now darrel has sent me a ton of pictures of random firearms he has applied cera kote on so i had no worries about his quality of work. i cannot find any flaws in the finish on it and he kept in very good communication with me as the progress was made with the cera kote for the carbine.
i wanted to go with cera kote due to how durable it is and that this is a boat/fishing gun for the most part. so if i wanted to take it off my shoulder and gently lay it down on some rocks while i fish or if i have to cut a trail through a wooden area i would not have to worry about the carbine getting damaged or having flaws in its finish. i also cannot stand bluing on everything. i also sent darrel my disco tube, 7in extension and rear tube plug for my disco to get cera kote'd in a matte black to match the black bnm breech and shroud i have for it.

so with out further waiting here are the chrony pictures and the pictures of the carbine.. very sorry if some of the pictures turned out bad, i can try to get some taken outside in good light...

here are some casual comments from lloyd about the work on the carbine

"The one piece front end for the valve is  a rsterne idea. The internals of valve were opened up pretty far, including rethreading the valve body to the next largest size and then fitting the new front end to it.  The cocking rod for the new hammer works pretty well and the spring can be changed out without having to do any more disassembly than just unscrewing the adjuster.  Transfer port and the pocket it fits into was opened up and o-ring seals were installed.  It stops the leaks."

here is the last bit of shooting lloyd did before sending it back to me.. it was detuned some but still very respectable and roughly the power level it will stay at

"The last batch I shot, which is how it is set now was with 21.5 gn kodiaks
start at 2500psi
878 fps 36.8 fpe
861   35.4
899  38.6
887  37.6

889  37.7
896  38.3
888  37.7
863  35.6

end at 1360 psi "

I got the DMC-FH8K which is what I used to take this pic: http://www.imgnook.com/spqMxo.jpg (http://www.imgnook.com/spqMxo.jpg)

They're selling at target for $149. Easy to operate and great reviews which is why I bought it.

149 is deff way out of budget for me, considering the new toys ive bought i need to find a cheap but decent camera or see if the ipad 2 i got my grandmother will take good enough pictures i could barrow it for a night

I don't know of any specific camera models but I'm sure a 10 megapixel can be had for less than 100 bucks.
My DSLR is a 10.2 megapixel and it takes great photos. I couldn't imagine a 24 or even 32.

Good luck finding a camera. I'm excited to see pics of your new woman, I mean toy...  ;D ;D

Mike,

I like your project.

I have a question on the relocated gauge.

Is there a bushing or port sleeve slipped into the air chamber to retain the gauge or is it threaded directly into the air tube?

lloyd made a seperate gauge block thats inside the tube that the gauge its self screws into.. he was able to get index so the gauge wasnt crooked when it was screwed in

Looks great. Why did the gauge get relocated?
Title: Re: The long awaited carbine thread (lots of pictures not 56k friendly)
Post by: MustangMike on November 01, 2012, 10:16:48 PM
thanks guys

the gauge got relocated for 3 reasons... 1) i wanted to keep the stock front camo grip and with the gauge in the og location i couldnt moutn the grip, 2) when filling it makes it easier to read the gauge while hand pumping (got a tank setup during its building

3) when was the last time you saw a pcp and/or a carbine like that with a side mounted gauge ? i havent seen one before...

altho this present challenges when putting a double tube on it, that front grip wont fit a 2nd tube and look good, the prod aka woods walker camo furniture would work but the front grip has a hole in it for the prods gauge and again it wont look good on a double tube.. so my only option is to get one of norms (which look good and are built for a double tube) and then send it off to try and get the same camo dip as the shoulder stock i have now.

SAM, id love to get some groups posted but even with a 7.5" tko on the end of it. its a hair to loud for backyard use.. its putting out 22cal mrod numbers on a unshrouded 17in barrel.. so its got a pop to it, i have to wait until i can make it to the lake house.

but i am sending it out to tyler aka tpatner for him to do a video review to showcase lloyd and darrels work on it as well he has something to better tame the bark so id be happy for him to show groupings. should be shipped out to him in the next 2 or so weeks...

Mike,
Glad you are having fun with this.  If you wanted to, you could swap out the spring for the lighter one. or possibly take the spacer out of the spring that is in there now.  You can tune it up or down depending on what is in store for the day.

lloyd i love the carbine thats for sure, its deff a hunter at heart. i figure im going to get a tin of jsb monsters in 22cal and see if i can tune it for 40fpe and the longer extension you sent me looks like it would fit with a doube tube setup. so im shooting for 6 shots at 40fpe

very nice build!
i take it your hammer face has a recess in it ?? for a longer hammer stroke?
i told you that tko wouldnt tame that bark too ;)
there is a solution but its more than twice the price of the tko bit its worth it
its funny cause im working on a build similar to yours but im using a don cothran 2260pcp tube.im having the fill adapter pinned instead of threaded. the fill adapter also will be home to the gauge.my valve is heavily modded and my rear cocking hammer assembly weighs in at 94grams, 96grams with the hammer spring.the hammer and guide weigh 70 grams ,the knob weighs 24grams but im having a new knob duilt that weighs 35 grams.i will be filling to 3000-3400psi the safe pressure advised by don c,the valve has 10-32 high strength low profile hex head screws.doubt it will ever see 3400psi unless i get a scba tank
heres to some pics the .041 hammer spring is actually the light hammer spring ;)

thanks guys

got some good news, ive been spending the last few days pondering a indoor chrony range. i had one before but it was some what hard to set the disco up on it. so im going to be building another one and should have a bunch of chrony numbers up for the carbine sometime in the next week or 2.. odds are sooner. lloyd sent me some springs to try out for various psi ranges and i got a tin of eun jin 28.5gr pellets from gil aka sqrl klr.. so im going for broke and a dead even 50fpe to see if i can get 3 shots off it with a 3000psi fill and then im going to detune it down to 30fpe and see how many shots i can get out of it with jsb 18.13gr pellets and then go back and figure out what energy level i want and then start narrowing down fill pressures so the first 3 shots are the sweet spot

finally found a dive shop that fills to 4500 so my tank is now sitting at 4100 psi...

I'm glad to see your going to dive world and thanks again for telling the shop owner about you tank guy,As so it sounds like he will have a bigger fill station in the future!
This is great news for us Central Texas guys!
O' and lets not forget the 4500psi station in Hutto, only on the weekends though.(Kamikazi Paintball Sports)

hutto is a good bit of a drive for me, i just take parmer to 620 hang a left,  hit 183 and hang another left and then right at the next light. follow it down to 620 and dive world is on the left hand side of lake creek ...

the carbine is FILLED !!!!!!!

have no idea why i was so paranoid about filling from a tank and what happens when the valve is cracked open or how much force is needed to crack the valve open.. went nice and smooth but altho i filled extremely slow since it took all of 15 seconds to fill the tiny air tube on the carbine it still got about as warm as the disco did when pumping it up by hand.. but oh well i feel like doing the happy dance now that i have a full usable tank .. well 4000psi is some what full

LOL,
yeah, it's kind of stressful the first 3 or 4 times you first fill your gun with a tank but after doing over and over,it's noting to do, try filling a Condor tank but I bet it's harder to fill a smaller tank, like the ones on your guns?

Title: Re: The long awaited carbine thread (lots of pictures not 56k friendly)
Post by: MustangMike on December 03, 2012, 01:16:24 AM
lol my disco has a 7in extension that alone took me from 20 shots between 2000 and 1000 psi to 40 shots exactly between 2000-1000 psi. not saying it doubled it but it added enough that ya its a loong tube.. one day you will get to shoot it and im going to double tube so the double tube will need to be 7in longer then normal so i can maintain my the use of extension and a super massive shot count. i want 3 to 4 full mags in the sweet spot with a heavy hammer spring and jsb 18.13 pellets.

the carbinei was really worried about because of how small the airtube is but it was a cake walk, really didnt fill all that fast. heck twice i was able to look down at the handle to make sure i was ready to close the valve at 2500psi. only the first 3inches of airtube got warm during the filling.

ALSO AN UPDATE : i take back what i said about it being loud lol, seem that once the pressure drops down to 1500-1650 psi it gets louder to where you get some ringing of the ears even with the tko... but from 2500 down to about 1850-1700 the tko does a BEAUTIFUL job at its well job. i mean seriously it does shockingly well from 2500-1850 but it is still just a tad to loud for my back yard but not for chrono testing in the garage..

and looks like im adding another tank from possum to my collection... thank you possum for working with me on that. so now i have a 44cf 30min tank and soon i will have a 88cf 60min tank..

Very nice Mike!  Love the stock!
How does it shoot?  Have you done any paper punching/accuracy testing yet?

I have been thinking about a Carbine built myself lately, but that includes a Talon SS (12" barrel) with a hi-flow tank and Condor hammer+spring.  Sort of a "stubby" .25cal with around 15-20 45-50fpe shots, or lots of 35-40fpe shots on low power with JSB Kings.

nice gun!
i just put together my stainless steel 2260pcp last night i was told to never shoot that gun in the house again or i would be banned LOL
know what you mean by loud.a while back i told you that tko wont do much for that bark ;D
there are solutions to that and run just over $100 cant wait to test mine
im going to post a thread on my recent build.like yours it is a beast cant wait to get the .25 together now

Mike, if you just need to take a little more of the bark out of it, try this.
Get a very sturdy cardboard box (double wall is perfect) about 2' x 2' x 3'.
Cut a rectangular hole in the middle of two opposite sides, about 1.5" wide x 3" tall.
Might have to be a little bigger or smaller.
Stick the muzzle into one of the holes, and shot out of the other hole.
All that volume in a heavy box will not so good up a lot of noise, and it doesn't cost a thing.
Throw an old blanket in there and it will get even quieter.

I use that method shooting across the chrony in my shop.

nice lloyd

but really in its power pressure range it wont be going down below 1800 psi.. from 2500 to 1800ish it nice, not as loud as a non tko disco maybe about the loudness of a gamo break barrel.. when i got it i couldnt fill it and lloyd was nice enough to leave 1500psi so i shot that down right away... tko is perfect just not for back yard work

disco has a leak at the gauge block so i gotta tear that down tonight or tomorrow and replace the oring and then i can focus on getting the chrony range setup.

i will say this with the power adjust cranked down to were it just barely cocks and then back off a 1/8 turn.. shooting 28.5gr eun juns at my padded box i shoot at in the garage dang near knocked it over

and im picking up a tank from possum 5yrs of life left, fresh hydro this year, 170 shipped for a 60min scba tank.. so that gives me a 30 minute tank and a 60 minute tank so ya no more excuses to not buy a 25, 2 double tube kits and get in all the shooting i want

Like to see that with a BNM repeating breech and ldc.
