Title: Chronyed the 45 cal. Corsair today
Post by: melloroadman on October 26, 2012, 10:40:31 PM
Sent the 357 that I bought from Grumpy to LI Bob and he fitted it with a TJ .452 1 in 16 twist  CM barrel for me . All I had to do was fit a barrel band to it . Nothing other than a caliber change was done to the rifle .

These are straight fills which I normally do not do . Had 15 mile a hour wind today so I did not try for all out accuracy . But it had no problems grouping with the bullets I have tested in the past in the Gargoyle .Here are todays readings .

And this is were it was at as a .357 . Marvin

The rifle is strong enough to hunt for sure . And we need to remember this is a QB based rifle with only a 7/8 air tube like a Discovery .Marvin

that is something!
pretty good for a gun that is qb based!! 8)
have you had a chance to do some accuracy testing yet? i saw it was pretty windy when you did the velocity testing

The rifle was grouping good enough with me not concentrating and the wind blowing that I am not worried . Have several rifles with TJ barrels and every one of them has proven to be accurate with the right sized bullet . Tomorrow I will chrony with a lighter spring to lower the air usage and psi. And stay with the lighter bullets . That was my intention from the beginning . After I get the tune of the rifle were I want it I will concentrate on accuracy . I have proven bullets and the barrel slugged at .452 so I have known perimeters to start with .Marvin

Did a couple spring swaps today . I really thought the fill would be higher with the first un- cut set spring but it was not . I had a uncut, non set spring I tried as well . But after the first set of readings on it I redid the RB and the 142 grain bullets and they were down 10 fps over the first strings . So the spring was taking a set . I will try some more springs another day . Would like to get the fps a little higher . Air usage by the tank gauge not a refill reading showed that the RB did not use any more air than the conicals . Every bullet other than the RB have been accurate in the Gargoyle . And all as well as the RB would group a 5 shot string at 50 yards with all projectiles touching each others . Marvin

I clipped .020 off of a stock spring and ended up with a 2800 psi fill . Gained about 60 fps over the 2300 psi fill . But the air usage went up 100 plus psi per shot . To make sure my usage reading was right before .  I changed the spring back and tested again today and the reading was correct . Going to try and get to around 2500 psi fill and stay around 850 fps with the RB . for now . That way I do not have to carry two tanks around at the range . Marvin

Shortened a stock spring to 2.750 and end up with a 2500 psi sweet spot when regulated . FPS should do for 50 yards for now . The RB are using about 10 psi less per shot than the 142 grain conicals . So I will start with them and see if I can get 125-150 shoots per tank . Marvin

Shot 150 RB through it today . And it would make one big hole with 10 shot groups . At 50 yards bi-pod on table , tethered and regulated at 2500 psi . Started with a 80 cf tank at 3490 psi and ended with 2690 psi . Tank is black and was in the sun so some heating may have taken place in the tank . But even if it did I should be able to get the 150 shots out of a tank . Marvin

Have a lot of alloyed lead . And I know the rifle will handle conicals to 22 bhn . So I cast these RB in 15 bhn to see what will happen . Will have to let them age . Then I will chrony them and test for accuracy . They have not been sorted , weighed or lubed .Marvin
