any one know a place to go shoot air guns in nj? i do almost all of my shooting in upstate ny. but next week the cottage gets closed up for the winter. i cant shoot here in my yard and i hate the idea of not shooting till spring :'(
i could join a local gun club for big bucks but i still can only shoot paper targets...not to exciting.

steve just move west where its gun friendly ,oklahoma is preparing for open carry next month. hows that for gun friendly?
-
Steve, I live in So. Jersey, places to shoot are few and far between. Most of our local ranges, don't even want air guns coming in the door. I take it you live in No. Jersey. I'm lucky I have plenty of room to shoot, as you can see in the pictures. As a member of GTA, any time you are in the area you are more then welcome to shoot here. Us Jersey guys are at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to any kind of firearms.
-
i'd move but my job and family might miss me..
nice yard tom , i wonder how many of us are here from NJ, maybe if there were enough of us we could have a GTA jersey fun shoot..
-
From what i have seen, most of the jersey guys are from the northern part of the state. A shoot would be great. I see some members, from Penna. just across the river.

Wow, what a poor elitist attitude. I wouldn't even want to associate with anyone who was like that. Isn't there already enough of a divide between gun owners and gun control advocates that they have to go and create ANOTHER one?!!
I never ran into that. At a friends range I use to go to, the only thing they cared about was you didn't shoot any rifles over .22 cal. My airgun didn't even get looked at.
EDITED for language violations.

GungaDin, I think it has a lot to do with Ammo sales. Been to the range a lot of times, and run out of ammo. So you buy more at the range. A 500 tin in your pocket, and you don't spend any money.
-
We are fortunate down here. We go and shoot firearms and I shoot air guns as well on some private property by the Trinity River near Wilmer. I believe to get a membership it cost around $200. Yes it is kind of pricey, but you get to shoot anything you wan't down there.

What about not closing up the cottage?
I know Where I live in upstate NY
Deer season is here, Ice fishing, Snowmobiling ETC A nice cottage will work well for some R+R
Luckily Where I am here I can shoot a quiet gun in my yard. Go a mile around the corner and Im at my inlaws who have 2 acers plus 50 acers adjacent I can shoot all day.
I can ride my snowmobile out my garage and hit the trail in 300 yards and ride to the lake 3 miles away!

well, first of all, its a 5+ hour drive for me to get there and 2nd, ITS COLD UP THERE! we draw our water right out of the lake so we have to remove all those pipes or the ice will smash them up. plus the pipes inside the house will freeze.
i love upstate NY. i think its the greatest place in the east. but at -10 with no heat or water... not so much.

I live in Morris County, I've asked a few of the local cops about shooting AG's on my own property and they have all said it is legal as long as you are safe and all is contained on your own property OR have the neighbors permission to use his property as well. You might check to see if you have similar ordinances. I'm pretty lucky in that I can shoot whenever the mood is right. My property goes back 300' from the house, back 100' is woods and the neighbors don't care if I shoot at all and there's a 100' high wooded hill (spelled "berm") rising from the rear property line. I haven't checked to see what might be thought about hosting a fun shoot but have been thinking about it for spring as I just can't seem to be able to get to the one in N.C. as the 12 hour drive adds two days to the trip. Maybe when I retire... after winning the lottery! :D

Yeah call your county's wildlife commisioner. He/she will know more than the sheriff's office or police dept or DNR. At least here, in the middle of USA, he does anyways, lol.

i grew up in New jersey and i always hated the gun laws.

Steve,
If Mercer county is not too far of a ride, you may want to consider Citizens Rifle & Revolver Club, website is www.crrc.org (http://www.crrc.org). I was planning on going there a few months ago for an airgun shooting event but got too busy with kids. they appear to be airgun friendly.
I pretty much shot in my basement when i have some free time.

Hey stevemag, how about just going offshore, do some fishing....and shoot em instead.
No neighbors, you can see the cops coming, and besides....take some beer along.
;D

I live in Morris County,
I have never lived in Jersey cept for the first two weeks I was born, but I was born in Morris County.
-
I never felt so liberated until I moved from S. NJ. If anything was fun, it was illegal or they taxed the heck out of it.

Sounds like Europe to me. Groan, and I mean Grooooooooan. Big time.
Working hard and expecting to reap the benefits is no longer lucrative. Sad. And the Creeps still choose to waste Tax Money on useless things.
Yep, leave NJ, and go offshore young man! Just take along enough beer.

I notice you live in Virginia now ;-)

I think there are quite a few of us forced to make do with a garage, basement, or attic. It's not ideal but it beats not shooting.
I have a permanent 5 meter range and can quickly setup 10 meters when everyone is in bed :) Grab and R7 and some very small targets.
-
is there no way to set up on your own property where you cant be seen or heard? even if you built a small privacy fence or section just to block the view. while a little bit of investment, it will be there at home for future shooting practice.
and maybe get a good quiet gun for shooting at home? thinking more long term. ;D
-
i have a qb78 that i have made quiet that i can shoot in my apt. when no one is home upstairs. not a lot of fun. i rent in a 2 family house so i cant shoot in the yard. even if i could, the police would be on me like white on rice as i can be seen from 3 sides. its pretty tight around here space wise.
thinking of joining here http://www.efga.net/ (http://www.efga.net/)
about an hour and a half away. best deal around but still no plinking, just paper. kinda defeats the purpose of the air rifle if you ask me.
-
I miss the plinking as well. I don't even use my Birchwood Casey spinner target in the backyard anymore. Too loud compared to paper in my silent wood box trap, and over many tins of pellets, I worry that it might only take one miss at the wrong angle on the metal support frame to take out a neighbors window. Lead pellets smoosh up pretty good and don't ricochet much at all, but I figured my luck would run out eventually. Our suburbia quarters are just too tight.

yes sir i do :) i love it here. When i first moved here the gun laws were amazing to me.Seeing people walking around with guns on the hip was a little..different. lol...as a shotgunner and an airgunner I'm very happy with the situation in VA. NJ always felt very restricted to me and I am glad to be free from it.

i understand. yea i like to shoot metal/reactive targets as well. guess paper is better than nothing. maybe NJ will come around one day. ;D

I used to live in Jersey and one day I packed up my motor home and attached my car and just left. That was about 26 years ago and only been back once to pick up my tools and guns that I had left behind at friends homes.
I believe NJ is the only state that requires both a Fire Arms ID card plus a Pistol Permit (2 seperate ID's) to buy even the weakest BB Gun made.
-
It is illegal to shoot airguns within the city limits where I live. I just shoot out the garage door and into my shed. Gives me 20 yards to play with and nobody can see my rifle or the pellet trap
(which has LEDs to light the target at night). No harm no foul.
-
it would be nice if i could just go off in the woods and shoot some tin cans but i'm pretty sure thats a no no here too...
-
I lived part of my life in NJ -- just outside NYC (paramus area). Powder burner rifles, air rifles, and wrist rocket slingshots (not kidding) are all part of the same penal code. If I recall correctly, they are all classified as firearms.
Thank goodness upstate ny isn't as bad as down there (but it still could be better). One day, when the kids are all grown up and on their own, I'll probably look to move to another state where there is less restriction (and land is cheaper).
