Title: Weihrauch HW85K need help? PLEASE!
Post by: Zed Sniper on September 20, 2012, 04:47:38 AM
I need some info on HW85K carbine .177. Are they accurate, twangy, or smooth shooters? Also is $300 to much? Any info fps, or any other specs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

The HW85 was intended to replace the R10 but it ended up more like the R9 with a longer barrel, I've never seen a K model 85! does it have a screw off end cap like the R10? if the rifle is in good condition $300 would be a good price! JMO :P

I don't know about the cap. It is for sale and I have been thinking about a replacement for my RWS 34, something better quality. I just can't find much about them on the net and would really like something a little more friendly for the yard. I have been eyeballing the R7 and the HW50. Thanks

How far are you planning to shoot in your yard? if noise is a factor then the R7 is the way to go but theirs not allot of power in that power plant! 630ish at best with a super good tune with a 7.9gn pellet! the HW50 is as loud and as hard to cock as an R9/HW95 in .177cal, an R9/HW95 in .22cal is fairly quiet after a little TLC to the power plant and will shoot 630 to 650fps. I've had a few R9's and HW95's in .22cal very accurate and quiet with a mild tune! and if you good with mildots you can make some very long shots 80yds+ and at these ranges I've dropped allot of pigeon's! :P

$300 for a Weihrauch built gun???? I would say yes without question. Getting back to the original posters question,..I can not comment on the 85 as I have never owned one. I have eye-balled them ( on AoA's website) in the past though and they appear to be handsome rifles.  And they are asking 5 bills.
Going on what I consider the 800/1000 rule,.... Advertised prices of a lot of springers made,.... I see it like this. A typical Diana 34 is marketed in 1000 fps in .177 and 800 in .22. Realisticly, the .177 shoots in the mid 800's to the mid 900's while the .22 usually runs in the 680 to maybe 720's. Hot ones can go even faster. Aoa's advertised velocity for the .22 is 700 fps. Probably be safe to say that it is more like a 630 although they do state that their velocity is based on a 14.3 pellet. Then again their aren't any absolutes with pellet size/fit and bore sizes. With that, your asking about a .177 which they don't offer. But going on the example ratio above, if 700 for .22 is the stated for this rifle, add 200 fps for a .177. That's 900 fps. Now deduct about 100 to 125 fps and that comes to around 775 to 800 fps. This is a ballpark guesstimate without real concrete data, but from passed experience, I doubt I'm too far off.
The rest of your questions, yes probably twangy out of the box, no Doubt a good tune would smooth it out more. Accurate,...it is a Weihrauch, need I say more :) And In The .20 to .22 calibers shooting at medium power by today's standards, I wouldn't think a .177 would  be much more louder. Perhaps higher pitched sound. If you purchase the 85, I am sure a lot of folks would like to hear about it in future reports,....including me ;)

Isn't the 85 the same gun that EAA used to sell?
I have an EAA-marked HW that I got for $119.00 in '07. It looks like an R9 with a longer barrel and grooved forend.
It has HW markings, but no model number.
HW and EAA were no help in trying to ID it.
It's .177 and shoots 830 fps with Crow Mags.
It's a bit twangy, but a reliable squirrel killer.

You can check the classified section for an HW. There are usually some good buys.
