Title: FINALLY got my hw90 back
Post by: Cliff on September 13, 2012, 11:17:19 AM
Sent it to Pyramyd for warranty repair, they sent it to Air Venturi. They took three weeks to fix it.
Three Weeks?  I guess they are busy.

Reason? Well the Gas strut leaked out.
I was having the dickens of  a time with my groups.  The thing was shooting fine at first and then after replacing a busted scope  {{{{{ DO NOT PUT A SCOPE ON THIS GUN without a SportsMatch Dampa mount}}}}}
It will destroy your scope
Mine was a Bushnel Trophy they make an elite that is supposed to be tougher but I rather suspect the gun at full factory precharge would break that too.

Anyway after fussing with the scope and getting a new one from Bushnell and  drilling and tapping my new Dampa mount for a locking pin Another story~!!  If you use a locking pin on this gun it HAS TO BE THE  DIAMETER OF THE HOLE.  If it is not, the pin will plow a furrow  out of the hole back toward  rear of the gun and that furrow will just keep going till it comes out the back of the Gun.    Very ugly.  DAMHIKT~!!  This, of course, means you gotta make your own pin using the head of a hardened Allen screw, to go in the hole in the gun,  that you will have to grind down a little to get it to fit in the hole.

Anyway I digress.

After all the above crapola, I had been having the dickens of a time grouping.  I wondered if the scope broke again, I tightened the  trunnion shims which sort of  kind of helped. I fiddled with my hold, ran a whole tin of pellets on the bench rest.  I was having a bad day,  day after day.  I was pulling my hair out,.  Brand friggin spankin new HW90 and I couldn't get  it to repeat.

And then the thing farted and that was all she wrote.
So back to mommy for some cupcakes and snuggles she went.
I got my gun back yesterday.

Mounted the Dampa and scope.   I wish they would make the Dovetails on scope mounts more accurately.
Anyway got it on and sighted in for 20 meters and the thing is drilling hole in hole groups like a match gun.

The grouping problem I was having was the pre charge leaking.   The shrader valve was leaking  and   that was throwing  everything off from shot to shot.

So I'm a happy camper and can't wait for 3:00 when the elementary school to  gets out.

Relief.  Yah.

I do have a complaint about the SportsMatch Dampa mount.   They left the parts in the tumbler too long.  It rounds over the sharp edges of the dovetail. They leave the parts in so long that the DT interface where it mates with the gun are almost gone.  This is a really stupid mistake in manufacturing and one that only the most amateurish newbie would make.   But they do their own QC and that means they are not accountable to anyone to  do things correctly.

I wonder if Theoben holds their feet to the fire on the Theoben branded ones.

I have 2 Theoben branded Dampa mounts and they're perfect. One of them is permanently part of the gun, the Eliminator has them built in so people don't cheap out on the mounts and keep feeding it scopes for dinner. The other one is on my RX-1 but the Dampa mount alone can't save unprotected scopes. A good scope will go a long way.
I do have a Sportsmatch branded medium mount as well (non-Dampa) and it's been great so far with no flaws but I think you're right about the QC (some probably fall through the cracks). They make them for Theoben and have made them for Beeman for many years and those are nothing short of perfect. They probably go through 2 or 3 levels of QC before reaching those guys.

Now that you mention locking pins and mounts, etc..
I didn't use a locking pin.
I use the old Dampa with the single screws on the rings and the darned thing hasn't moved a millimeter in over 15 years with the Leupold on it.

Curious to a dampa mount..............where do you find them?  Never seen one.  Congrats on getting the gun back.
