Title: REAL WORLD COMETA numbers ?
Post by: stevemag on September 12, 2012, 12:41:21 PM
Both PA and cometa's web sight are claiming the fenix 400 and fusion are shooting  over 900fps with lead pellets in .22
I've been searching for some real numbers on  these and they are all over the place. some say 15fpe others are sayin 20fpe one person claimed they are getting 900fps with 14.3 grain pellets...
anyone here have some experience with either of these rifles?

I just tore mine down and went through it....  these numbers are after less than 50 shots 14.66'FTTs 715 fps with a Maccari spring & seal.
( I was surprised to that before I set the spring..It was 2 1/2" longer than stock ...after , it was a 1/4" shorter)...that's prelim...it's going to come up a bit..
However: I am now shooting JSB 15.9..... I don't know fast they are going..but i can tell you this. I missed a shot and hit my trap..it's made of 3/4 Cabinet ply....I hit it on the end side between the ply's at 20 yards....Shredded. I would not want to be on the business end of my 400.

Just remember....Lead to us means an average of 14.3 gr.....that's where I start.
..Cometa may use lead..like RWS Hobby's = 5.5mm 11.gr .It's lead. We just don't know the specifics. ;)

If I have time tomorrow , I'll chrony it again

Side note:
** The Fusion & Fenix Both share the same power plant.***

Hi Steve,

I picked up my Fusion .22 from AirgunAdventures.com (Randy Mitchell), really a nice gun.   For some reason a few months ago vendors were selling these cheep (I got mine for $200).  I have not did the home tune on it, but here are some numbers:

10-shot each:                        avg. FPS     std. Dev.      FPE
RWS Super HP (13.9gr.)            777              4.02         18.2
CPHP  (14.31 gr.)                      762              9.2           18.2
HN FTT (14.66 gr.)                    756              8.2            18.4
HN Hollow pt. (12.65 gr.)           797              31.2          16.8

I don't see the high fps numbers mentioned with the stock gun, or they are probably with very light pellets.  Agree with Petey, lead fps numbers are 14.3 and above ;D

Accuracy is really nice, I was getting dime size 3-4 shot groups at 25 yards, and probably could do better if I take my time, seems like I am always rushing.  Trigger is nice but I could feel a little 'gritty' when pulling the trigger, I'll probably tear it apart and polish the surfaces to make it a sweet trigger.  Definitely a keeper, and probably a little louder than my X20s.

John

Took the 400 outside ...Started to shoot CPHP 14.3 gr over the Chrony. I tried to get the head size as close a possible for consistency's . No can do...too many different sizes in the tin(garbage) Shot some at random..I saw the tight ones lows as 690...loose too okay as high as 788....
So I grabbed what I shoot..
JSB Exact Jumbo 15.9

10 Shots
Low- 655.9
High- 729.7
AV-675.0
ES-73.8 Yikes...? Not settled for sure....only about 300 rnds.
SD-22.89

665.2
663.8
661.0
679.1
729.7 Curve buster
665.1
663.2
666.3
700.3 Curve buster
655.9

Throw out the two highs It's pretty good. Mind you that 's a 16gr pellet it's chucking. At 655.9 FPS that's 15.19 Ft lbs Ke

FTT 14.66 5.53s are a bit tight, My 400 seems to favor 5.52
11 shots- oops
L-683.7
H-738.8
Av-711.6
Es-55.12
SD17.74
That's about as real world as "I" can offer.

Happy Shootin To All!
Petey.

wow, cometa must have been using some really light lead pellets to get the 900 fps w/ lead that they claim. i guess thats the next thing, with everyone fed up with the inflated #s from pba ammo. now they must have found some 10 grain lead 22s to use in testing. man i'd love it if they all used  real #s and included the pellet weight. it's so deceiving.

John has some good numbers.....mine are bit low , due to the fact that I put the new seal in a bit snug....it's coming out for a refit....not so much for the numbers , but to smooth things out a bit.
Even at the 675 I have.. I blew a shot , missed my trap( I do that sometimes ) and put that 15.9 through my 1/2 inch OSB backstop....Clean through and into the fence.....Dare I say another sheet would a good Idea.
Yes the numbers game is a vicious trap....Combine true performance and knowledge and you will be amazed to find what you Don't need.

Petey,
I think a tight seal could definitely reduce the fps until it breaks in, who knows how many rds that will take.  I did a lube/hone/replaced the piston seal on my brothers Daisy Powerline 1000S (Hatsan made).  The piston was incredibly tight, it was shooting 600 fps!   The seal was a nightmare to put on the piston, so I didn't want to remove it, and I don't have a drill press to spin it, so I had to resize it manually with 600 grit sandpaper.  Took about 1/2 hour, but got it to about 875fps with 8.3gr RWS Super domes and real accurate.   My brother was real happy with it.

Steve, I think you need a variety and just enjoy the these babies.

thanks
John

900 fps with a standard, 14.3 pellet is smoking!  I was talking with a Diana devotee and we were discussing the 54 in .22.  About 830 fps, factory.  Something is up with those published numbers.  My bet are lite pellets.  700 fps for a mid-powered break barrel is still pretty decent.
