Title: Pigeons beware, Bad Betty is sporting some new eyewear!!
Post by: Trackmyer on July 31, 2012, 08:25:49 PM
Put a  Multi-reticle TruGlo dot scope on Betty, and I like it even better than the iron sights.  Tightened groups up nicely.
Decided to change things up a bit since its been so hot, the birds have got seeds scattered all about the yard and will not stay in one spot long enough to get a solid lock on them.  So, took a plastic tray with a 3/4" lip on the sides, poured 3 cups of seeds on it, then poured a bunch of water on it all.  Well it works like a champ.  Birds hone right in on it.  Stay put while eating and drinking.  And within short order dropped 3.

Great idea and shooting. They keep coming to our yard to drink from our daughters pool. Without to much to say my yard is now a "no fly zone" :)

Troy, I don't think Betty (or you) needed that scope! LOL! head shots, on pigeons, with a pistol is most impressive.

Thank you fella's, but its not like Im shooting some long distance pest shots like some of you folks do.  My property isnt big enough.  My pest shooting is only 30-50 feet max.  As far as the dot sight.  I do like iron sights better than a scope for less than 25 yards.  However, the illuminated dot makes it easier with less eye strain.  Your not lining up fronts and backs or worried about anything.  Just put the dot where you want it, and have at it.  As long as you've done your homework your good.  Hardest part is getting the dang ol bird to stay still for more than 2 seconds.
Thanks again all.

Yup x2. All that head bobbing is annoying but it pays off in the end :)

Hi All:

Hey Trackmyer how do you like your holographic sight as compared to a scope?? I'm using a 3x9x50 tasco and I notice that I'm bouncing around alot , this could be due to my caffine addiction and the wind blowing the door open. Would like to hear your spin pro or con.

Pro's-
1)Using a dot sight like the one I'm using makes target acquisition extremely fast.  This brand is a bunch cheaper than an EOTech, but same principle.  No tube to look down just a holographic image.  Like using a laser sight without broadcasting the light like a laser does.

2)This model has 5 power levels, green or red.  Which is nice cause red stands out good if your target is near heavy green vegetation.  The green is my preferred though cause its much easier on my eye. You have multiple reticle options as well ranging from plain dot to a variety of crosshair types.

3)Target alignment.  By having a holographic image alignment is not an issue.  Your gun could be canted, or held in any manner, and where you see the dot is where its going.  Scopes on the other hand have to be cheeked proper or your sight image is shadowed.  With scope you can move your poi with just slight change in cheekweld.  You basically have to train yourself to be proficient with a scope, and that learning curve I think is much shorter with a dot sight.

4)Light weight, small profile.  Much smaller than a scope.  Easier to maneuver when in thick vegetation.

5)Easier to use when shooting weakhand side.  Sometimes shots present themselves when your body is facing somewhere else and you either shoot weakside or not at all.  With red dot, you can fire either hand because as I said before the round will go where the dot is.  To enforce this upside try to shoot your scope with your weakside sometime, darn near impossible.

Downsides-
1)No magnification.  So close range is great, but at farther ranges even the smallest dot image is still large on your target.

2)No way to adjust yardage on the fly, so you must zero at your average shot range and use Kentucky windage and holdover for anything beyond. (In other words, your very limited to accurate shot placement to just your zero range)

3)You now are using an electronic device, so to an extent you are dependant upon battery power.  Nothing worse than being set up on a target to start losing power and have to shoot blind down side of barrel, or give up shot all together.  Spare battery in pocket is a must for extended hunts in field (just in case).

Overall you just have to ask yourself why are you using an optic device over iron sights.  Do you need the magnification?  Or do you use a scope just cause you are better at it than lining up front and rears while keeping focus on target?  If you don't really need the image magnification factor than a red dot is probably right up your alley.

Ogre, Shadow, and Aack...thank you fella's.
