Title: Hunting Squirrels in SoCal
Post by: .22 Varmint on July 29, 2012, 07:37:51 PM
I am located near Los Angeles and I'm interested in hunting squirrels. It appears that the nearby Angeles National Forest is part of a "no hunt zone" according to the hunting regulations. In the hunting regulations there is a map showing the counties with no hunting year round, and those that have a season for squirrels. It looks like Kern is the closeset place with a squirrel hunting season. Where do you guys hunt squirrels up there? Do you guys know of any particular place that is "airgun friendly" where I can go to hunt squirrels? I am willing to do some scouting if required. Thanks in advance!

Andy the zones you are referring to are only for grey squirrels. You can hunt the brown ground squirrels all year with no limit.
So anywhere near you where it is legal to hunt you can hunt ground squirrels and jack rabbits as much as you like.
hope this helps ;D

Good news. I was curious also. I see them up there all the time, but the rangers don't offer that information. They usually tell you it is not allowed, but I have noticed I get different responses every time I go up their.

Thanks for the Input! I know about the ground squirrels, but I was thinking about those tree squirrels. I would like to have a shot at some of those.

Always carry a hunting license and a copy of the book with the section you are hunting earmarked/tabbed.

(start mini-rant)
The tree squirrels are literally a plague on the areas, having had a massive population explosion in the last few years.  So much so that some are being found recently with rodent plague.   The laws say you can't hunt them, though, because of some idiot decades ago deciding that they were endangered or something.   This always happens, and with the liberal idiocy that generally infects California, you can't do anything about any sort of pest at all, or hunt virtually anything any more, even in the forest areas.

The animal control's response to a coyote in our neighborhood recently was amusing as well. "If it's lying on your lawn sick or is dead, we'll come pick it up".   The response from the local city council was to call a pest control company about the vermin.  The pest control company said that poison is about the only thing that works (they avoid traps pretty well).  Well, that's a no-go with the pets and kids around in the area.

So they chew on our wires, get in our trash, eat our fruit, and on and on.  And we can't really do anything about it.  Welcome to Southern California.  Sigh.

Note - so here I am looking at them most weekends out the window and shoot in my garage (small 10m range of sorts).  Heh.  It's kind of comical, really.

This pretty much sums up the issues I have been having while trying to find a good place to hunt. The laws and regulations seem to fight me every step of the way. :(
