Title: 17 FPE Crosman 160
Post by: Paul68 on July 15, 2012, 06:57:36 PM
Got this 160 awhile back as some might remember. Been considering sending it out for a tune and restoring it. Now I'm not so sure I wanna touch  it lol.

Far as I know, this is an unmodified rifle and a CMP version.

Chrony testing and shooting today really surprised me. I knew it was doing 14+ FPE with CPHP's. Today though I put some 16 gr Air Arms and 25 gr JSB Monsters through it.

650 FPS avg with 16 grain Air Arms for 16 FPE.

550 FPS with 25 grain JSB Monsters, for 17 FPE!

Crazier yet, its accurate at 25 yrds with the JSBs. Past that though drop is pronounced.

Getting only about 24 full power shots on a set of Co2's before power drops.

I have no idea if I want to have this thing taken apart, or just refinish the stock and have the barrel reblued.

Paul,

Those numbers are right in line with my Crosman 160.  Mine shoots 14s at ~630 and 20-24 shots.  I always though that I had  poor shoot count for 2 12gm CO2 carts but at least I'm not alone.

Hmm. I'm guessing yours hasn't had any work done Tom?

I may just have Mike replace the soft parts and barrel with a QB barrel while I refinish the wood, then have the original barrel reblued and reinstalled later. This is a bulk fill candidate I think. Or tank I should say.

Bone stock except for the valve seat that I replaced about a year ago.  I refuse to put any qb parts in it.  I know it's irrational, but I like the fact that it is all original except for the home made teflon seat, of course.  :)

Anyone try bulk fill on the 160"s? If so how did it work out for you and were did you get your parts.

I had a 160 that was weak cosmetically but shoots great.  refinished stock to my liking, and had tim mcmurray put on a gen 2 brake - now quiet - and his bulk extension tube and another barrel band.  it get about 50 good shots.  for looks, its about the same as a disco, but shoots great and has that amazing quality bolt action and trigger.
