Title: Hi guys, newbie here. Question about Benji np trail
Post by: wz3mo on October 08, 2010, 01:28:14 PM
I'm new and this is my first post. First let me say what a great forum this is and so happy I found it. My name is Wyatt, I'm 56 and live in Springfield, MO. I bought my first AG, the trail NP AW. My question; I first installed the GRTIII trigger and wow...what a difference! I'm grouping under 1 1/4" at 25 yards which I'm pleased with since I can't keep the da#*! cross hairs still! I also have a new seal and moly for a tune, but should I mess with it and  do the tune or leave it alone for now since I like the way it shoots? Think the groups will tighten up? Thanks for any advice!
Wyatt

Hi, Wyatt

Glad you like your new Trail :)  You've come to the right place to ask questions.

I'm assuming you bought your gun new, since it's a recently produced Trail NP?  If so, then my advice is to go ahead and put a tin or two of pellets through it before you tune it.  If it's already shooting good, then so much the better!

The trigger replacement you did was a good start, though.  It will make the breaking-in period a lot more enjoyable :)

Welcome to the loony bin,
-Joel

Welcome Wyatt to the GTA, I also would at least use the seal in the gun for the break-in period (as long as it is not smoking or detonating) then change it over after a couple of tin's, be sure to use a compressor an be safe when you do open it up, there is a ton of info on doing your own tune on here.Shoot Safe an have fun with your new addiction.

Welcome Wyatt to the GTA its a great place to be , I would give it time to break in before I tuned it , could be you have a good one if there is no smoke I would just keep shooting it to season the barrel then the groups should tighten up . Thanks David

Hey Wyatt, welcome to GTA Forums and the wonderful world of airgunning. Glad you joined up. You started with a good gun choice, IMO. The GRT-III trigger is the BEST upgrade you can do for any gun it fits. I see you are from Springfield, did you by chance buy the Trail at BPS??? One of my favorite stores. My family and I spent an entire day walking through there seeing everything they had on display. We have one here in Memphis and Nashville but they don't hold a candle to the main store there.
Anyway, with your new NP AW a 1-1/2" group at 25 yards is VERY good for a first time AG shooter. It takes some getting use to and just because a person is a good shot with powder burners does not automatically make them a good shot with an airgun. They compliment each other but not an automatic thing. The folks have given you some advice and opinions that are very good. I'll just toss my 2 cents in too.
Make sure you do a thorough initial cleaning of the bore with weedeater string, patches and Goo Gone. Run a few dry patches through afterwards too. Check all bolts and screws. Seperate the metal and stock to tighen the breach bolt. A little cleaning with alcohol and applying blue locktite to the all threads will help it stay snug. Reassemble, tighten all bolts and just shoot it. There is a difference in pellets and different guns shoot better with different ammo. So, you may have to experiment later on. It sounds like the ammo you have is working well though. At 25 yards, do not use a wadcutter round. Those are designed for 10 yards or less and mainly target punching. Also remember if you change ammo, your POI will usually change also and you will need to re-zero the scope.
Get the seal and some moly. Put it aside for a while, until you put a few hundred rounds through the gun or it starts slinging lead all over and not where you point it.Then you can tear it down, do a home tune/lube and hopefully get it back where you want it.
Again, welcome. Post often and post pictures of your airgun adventures.
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Welcome to the GTA FAMILY Wyatt great people and a great place to be. :D I would just set the extra's aside myself since she seems to be performing to your liking. The seal etc. will be there when she's in need of them and this will give you more time to get to know your shooter and pic up more info on prepping your shooter for a new seal and son on. After the new seal is installed there may be some break in time for it to seat into the compression tube properly and letting the proper lubes find their happy place so to speak. I have  b26 that hasn't seen a tune yet since she shoot's so good now I don't want her to get fussy on me yet hehe. If you do any pest control or hunting feel free to post a story and or pics in our Hunting Gate, some airgun hunt addict's here too. ;) Ed

Hi Wyatt and welcome to the GTA. It really is a great place to be and you can learn a lot here.

Glad you like the GRT-III and if you like the way it shoots, wait a little while and get used to shooting a springer. Yes, the groups will close up if you After several hundred shots, jump into it with both feet.

Hello Wyatt. Welcome to the Forum. You and I are neighbors of a sort. I, too, live in Springfield, MO.... just a couple of miles or so South of the Bass Pro Shop. You'll find a great bunch of guys and gals here, always ready to lend a hand with any questions you may have. A word of caution..When I joined here, I had one air rifle..I now have a dozen and am about to buy a Trail, probably an XL in 22 and I blame it all on these folks..LOL. As you'll find, this is an addictive habit, but what fun! Glad to see you.
