Title: BSA Meteor
Post by: LAalex on June 22, 2012, 12:29:39 PM
I will attempt to restore my brother's old BSA Meteor in the near future.  It apparently was imported by the Ithaca Gun Co.  IIRC he got it in 1980.  I don't have time to post pics right now but will soon.  Any help with locating breech seals,  spring guides, and piston seals would be much appreciated.  ARH carries a spring for it.

Use a HW35 breech seal, the piston seal is just an o-ring (unless its a mk1 then its a leather seal I think).
Buffer washer you can get from the UK still or a 1/2" tap washer can be made to work, if you need to replace the spring guide I would get one made out of delrin.

 Time to repay a favor------------

Start on the Meteor board on the British BSA forum----and pay attention when 'Rancid Tom' has advice about Meteors---he is the resident expert. Observe in particular his admonition about not trying to soup up the Meteor----after seeing the 'innards' his reasons are obvious.
It's an 8-9fpe gun---use it as it was intended!

If you want to follow it you will find several threads detailing my own restoration of a Meteor last year.

Piston seal is a common o-ring from any stocking source. After paying a ridiculous sum for one I found that all of my o-ring assmts. included it.

Breach seal from an HW-80/R-1 is far better than the BSA item but must be cut to the right length.

The ARH spring will fit the stock guide well with a single layer of polyolefin shrink wrap on the guide. If he'll do it have Macarri set the spring for you because it's a PIA to install otherwise.

If I ever do it again I will make a substitute for the buffer washer before I'll pay John Groenwald $35 for o-ring, buffer & HW-80 breach seal. 'Small order surcharge' my red ---!

If you have questions give me a shout.    Tom

Thanks for the advice guys--I'm sure I'll be picking your brains in the near future.  I did check out the BSA forum and it looks like a treasure trove of good info.  More to come...
