Title: Tuff Nutter
Post by: Froghunter on October 06, 2010, 10:18:10 PM
Harvest Nutter number four.......for this year. He was a tuff one to drop. The first shoot hit him hard, I heard the whack and he had a death grip or so I thought. I was waiting for him the fall, but he didn't The second shoot hit wood, you can tell the sound was different. Third was a solid whack, but still hanging from the branch. The fourth one anchored him to the forest floor. After looking at him......he had one under his chin and exited at the left shoulder. I believe this was the first hit. The second hit I think was the one that went throught about middle of the body.........and the last one was the one that split his eyes balls and exited the back of his fusebox. After that.......he had enough!   :o

Wow that was one big tough Gray.  He is a good-sized one.  Good shooting(?)  :)  Goes to show you that squirrels need good head-shot placement too.

I hate having to shoot them more than once, but sometimes you have to just shoot to slow them down enough for the follow up shot.  Once they are stunned, it is a LOT easier to finish them with a head shot!

I know from my youth, a lot of the time, we'd use shotguns. You get a lot of wounded squirrels with a shotgun, but they usually fall.  Then you can either shoot them again or finish them with a club.  We really didn't switch to the pumpers until all the leaves were gone from the trees.

Good shooting and glad you followed up with put down lead. I said it before nutters can be some of the toughest critters around. Ed

They can be tuff lil' guys. Like some of the gang...I have shot them with shotguns, .22 RF rifles and pistols, Black powder rifles and shotguns. I have tried shooting them with slingshots and recurve bows, but wasn't successful! :P The best tool I think is the Airrifle for squirrels with a head shot. You can't beat it.......course it maybe good to be able to shoot a dangerous game aminal..........but I will never be able to afford that type of hunt......So I will have to continue the hunt the much more dangerous eastern gray squirrrel with an airgun!

Good shootin! I've seen a squirrel take 3 to the chest with a 22 while doing pullups on a branch. They can be tough.

I'm always amazed at how tenaciously nutters will cling to life.  Nice harvest.

Ive seen them scurry off after taking 2 rimfire shots to the body, I just can't understand how they can be so tough.....wierd

I think the .22 rimfires just go through their body so fast perhaps is what causes them to keep going.  I've never hit one though with my TF 89 or RWS 350 that didn't stop.  Maybe it is because when using the air guns you just know you have to take a better shot.

I have wounded them where I needed another shot to finish the job though, especially on "wild" squirrels those that live away from civilization. They tend to keep moving a lot more and the shots you have to take are usually offhand or quick.  If you don't take the shot that is presented on them, you aren't going to get any of them, especially when the leaves are so thick this time of year.  I think it was Only1Harry that got me taking a shot to stop them and then finishing them quickly with a follow up shot.  Still I aim for the head and shoulder area.  I don't shoot any further back.

You finally got him down....too bad it took so many shots.  And yeah, I've read those nutters are tough to drop on the first shot sometimes....even with a head-shot.

Now that we know you used a HW50....what kind of scope mount you've on her.....looks like it's got 9 bolts holding it onto the air rifle!!!!

G2H,

It's a BKL Model 260 with .007" drop. It only has six screws for tightening. The scope is a Bushnell Trophy 4-12X40 AO.

Man! That's a small fox! I sneak-up on 'em and poke 'em with the muzzle of the gun to see if they have any fight left.  Unpredictable little nut-buzzards.

However, there was this skunk, once...

Just goes to show that squirrels really can take a pummeling.
I don't care to use scatterguns on them for that reason.
At least with an air rifle or rimfire, you almost always know for sure whether you have made a solid hit.

I've hit those "dang" things with 1 1/4 oz of 4 shot at 20 yds with a 12ga and they keep going like the Energizer Bunny.
