What do I lube the leather piston with? Its an old springer. And how can I find out what year it was made? There is a 4 digit ser. No. On the barrel.

You can use pure silicone oil. Try a hobby shop which supports radio controlled (R/C) cars. Supposed to be used for their shock absorbers. Crack the barrel, add a few drops down through the transfer port (where the air comes out of the compression tube) and sit butt-down for a day or two to allow it soak in. Some people like to mix two parts silicone oil to one part neats foot oil.
Is your 801 one of those with the cross-hatched checkering on the butt and the automatic pellet loader? If so, these were made around late 50's. Unique little guns.

Thanks RedFeather! I'll try that. The one I have must be from the 50s. Think I'll try to make a new piston sometime soon.
