Air rifle - SAG AR-2000 Jet .22 - also known as Tech Force Jet
Test pellet - JSB Predator Polymag - 16gr
Chronograph - Shooting Chrony Beta
Conditions - Sunny, bright and warm - humidity (Lord only knows and he aint telling me so give us a break will ya)...
The very first shot ran home at 875fps but I chose not to count this as the rest were more indicative, I think. This one must have been one of those fliers you get every now and then...
On average it achieved 855 fps, but the spread was phenomenally tight. The low was 854fps and the high was 856fps from the small group of approx 6 pellets (and not counting the flier). The energy from these would be just on 26 ft-lb at the muzzle for this velocity... Not bad at all...!!!
This means that to achieve the factory stated velocity in .22, of 940fps, you'd have to use a pellet of about 13.3 gr... I suppose it's quite very achievable but I personally wouldn't fire a pellet that light in this rifle. Draw your own conlcusions...!!!
Just for your info...

This is a bone stock Jet?

x2 with Paul68, how many shots did you have with this rifle, is there any chance it is has some lube on it an is dieseling? I just stripped down my TF89 .22 and it was loaded with lube, definitely dieseling. The piston slid out easily, very little force required to pull it out. Otherwise, that is a powerful springer you have there. How is it to cock?
thanks
John

This actually seems a little low as I recall seeing Jets cronied in the mid-low 900's in .22 cal I think. Before I succumbed to buying a Hatsan 125, I was planning on a Beeman Mach 12.5, which is the Jet in a more attractive stock. It'll take me a little longer now, but I'll have one of these 2000 variants eventually, and some real world numbers are welcome.

Could be the 16gr pellets showing the lower fps.

Thanks, that slipped right past me and is exactly the case.

That is still 27 FPE. Not the 30+ I've heard about, but darned respectable.
That is what my indicated after it was tuned. The good thing is mine is deadly accurate. I currently use 18 grain JSB pellets for accuracy.

Sorry guys, been a little pre-occupied in the past day or so..
Yes, this rifle is STRAIGHT out of the box, no mods, just a quick wipe down and barrel cleanout when I unpacked it.. I bought it about 2 months ago and all up I had fired ony about half a dozen shots though it before the chrony test 2 days back. There was no smoke from the barrel and no extra audible sound of dieselling and no smell of burning oils etc that you normally get with dieselling, and, with the fact that all of the shots from No2 onwards all being within a few fps of each other, I'd say there's a fairly good chance that I was seeing a completely average performance, and Yes, 855fps was with the Predator Polymag at 16gr, so if I used a 13 - 13.5 gr pellet it probably would have given well in excess of 900fps and approached what the factory claims possible. That's based on the 26 ft-lb or energy that it achieved...
I don't really plan to use the Polymags in this rifle as they are bought for the Crosman Marauder PCP Pistol (P-rod), but I bought 1000 Polymags and some of them were damaged (slightly squashed on the skirts) so after re-shaping the damaged ones, I wound up with a small handful of those I considered a little too damaged, so I used them for the test because of the good weight range and to get rid of them while getting a benchmark energy level for the Jet - that's all I was after - energy level NOT velocity. It might also explain the flier I got for the first shot, which I never counted in the averaging out of the velocity...
How hard is the Jet to cock..??? It's plain HARD...!!! I have a couple of Webley Patriots .25 and the Jet is in the same league to cock...
The one thing I don't really love on the Jet is that TH stock. As a rule I don't get into TH stocks of any sort, but you can't buy them here without one...
For your info...
Although I don't subscibe to many factory given velocities, they claim or at least advertise the Jet at .177 = 1250fps and .22 = 940fps. Going by the results I got, I'd once again say,, it's quite possible to get these figures in .22, BUT, just what pellet you use to do so is the key. It would have to be at the lighter end of the pellet range, those which I woudn't personally use. If I can drag myself into giving the Jet a field tryout, I might use either the JSB Exacts @ 16gr or Air Arms Diabolo Field @ 16 gr as a preferred pellet... I have others but I'd start with these...
-
Thanks for the info. I've a feeling the JETs are getting too little recognition considering how they appear to be performing out of the box. With a good tune, 30 fpe should be a practical expectation. Since your results are so consistent, I'd guess you have a good seal and good factory lubing. I want the Beeman version precisely because I can't stand the stock on the Jet. I haven't seen much negative about fit and finish either, which makes these a tempting choice.
-
Ah, ok Paul...
I didn't know they also came in the Beeman guise and with a better stock to boot. Over here we get "some" Beeman airguns so I might just look around to see if there are any about the place. I have seen many airguns that look like others lately, only to learn they actually are rebrands although I believe the SAG AR-2000 Jet is the real thing,, the actual out of the factory model name,, not that I care too much. If only I knew that before, but hey, it's all done and dusted as they say... The Jet is a big unit,, big and heavy as airguns go, but nowhere near the weight of other brands that have similar power. I tried to swap the stocks between the AR-2000 and the AR-1000 Magnum but no go. The AR-2000 is longer in the cylinder by about a couple of inches - give or take... The AR-1000 is a very sweet rifle to use, a slightly toned down model from the AR-2000 but still no slouch and sold in the US as the Tech Force 89... I'll have to chrony that before too long now...
Cheers Paul...

@SSS$$$ of ^&$@_=s was kind enough to confirm for me a few weeks ago that the Beeman Mach 12.5 was indeed the TF Jet in a nicer set of clothes. I'm not seeing the Jet for sale at Pyramyd of AGD anymore, so I'm wondering if production has ceased. If so, I might have to jump on the Beeman ASAP while its still available.

All, Thanks for the updates. I've been interested in the TF Jet .22, but I too could not get past the way the stock looks. I liked the Mach 12.5, but thought the fps was inflated (as so many do with the light way pellets) and was just another 700-750 mid- power AG (actually thought it was the TF89 clone). So I picked up the TF89 in .22. Now I'll have to reconsider the Mach 12.5, just what I needed.....how am I going to explain this one ;D

Hey wow, that's MUCH better looking than the walking stick I got.. I'm going to look for one of those very soon.. Nice.. Thanks for that update...
Update,,
Blast it all, no such animal anywhere here... Oh well, at least I have the walking stick...!!!

LOL, it depends on how bad you want one. :) I have a tuned one on the shelf downstairs......:P (A Jet)

I don't think you went wrong with a TF 89 though. It has a plenty of power and is WAY easier to shoot than a Jet. Also much cheaper to shoot since you don't have to have special heavy pellets to keep it under control.

Not sure what you mean no such animal anywhere. Manventure has 6 Mach 12.5's in stock. Pyramyd has em as well.
**EDIT**
I'm guessing your'e outside the States?

Atchman2,,
Yes, the TF89 (or AR-1000 Magnum, as it's sold here) is a lovely rifle. It's quite powerful too, probably more powerful then a few other rifles I have in the same velocity category. The good thing is that it wont quite crack that sound barrier. If it did, I would have bought the .22 version, just to ensure it was below the barrier... It's easily cocked, slightly lighter and a lovely looker, and has less recoil...
Paul68,,
"No such animal here" - Unfortuately I am in New Zealand so unless I want to import any airguns, the likes of Pyramidair and those few others are on "distant shores" to me... Never know, maybe one day when I really want something, I'll look closer at these places...
-
GunnerAl,
Enjoy your TF Jet, sounds like it your getting some powerful and repeatable numbers with it. I'd be real happy with that variation.
Atchman2,
I like the TF89, currently doing a home tune/lube on it before I scope it., I like the TechForce dark cherry (?) coloring, and probably would have picked up the TF Jet if not for the stock. Also considered the TF87, but I was concerned with the cocking force.
thanks
John

Cheers Johnny Z,, I am quite amazed that a springer like the Jet, or as powerful as it anyway, can deliver such tight velocities, especially when it so new.. Everytime I look at your avatar I wonder what sort of bike that is. It looks like my last bike - Honda 919 Hornet. Sold mine just 18 months ago,, wish I had kept it now. Isn't that the way it always goes...???
-
The TF87 is a powerful accurate rifle. For me the issue with it is that I'm a hunter and it is way too heavy to carry in the woods. I have a Gamo sling on my TF 89 that works great! Also the TF 89 has to be one of the easiest rifles to shoot offhand while hunting. It doesn't have that heavy forward barrel like my German guns. It just has a great balance.
-
@ GunnerAl, it's a 1995 CB1000F, very similar to your bike (based on a quick google), sweet. It needs work, but hope to have it running this year :D
@Atchman2, Is that the TF89 with the sling on your avatar? Love your hunting posts. After I lube/tune mine and work on the trigger, I hope it will be as nice as my other TF89.
Thanks
John
