I was so inspired by the American Airgunner episode where Paul was shooting his 350 with open sights, I yanked the scope off of mine! My main problem shooting targets with open sights is not being able to clearly see the sights in my woods.
On that episode, he put a piece of white paper near his target. Man that does the trick! I was consistently ringing my cow bell at 35 yards off hand! I'm going out somewhere else this week so I can put some targets further out and giving it a try. It is a lot more challenging shooting with open sights, but the RWS 350 has really nice sights for precision shooting. It also balances pretty well so I can hold it and keep a steady sight picture.

I shoot offhand MUCH better with open sights.... having a scope really mentaly tricks me out because every little twitch shows up so much more.... then you end up trying to be more still and just ending up moving more....
though I do pretty good at up to 4x at 20+ yards

Yes i am shooting better with open sights to . I am going to buy another little 25 cal springer, that i am going to use the ironsights only
-
What pray tell is a "little" .25 springer? :D
-
Yes the gun is little, not the cal. ;D
-
I'm just asking what kind of .25 gun are you looking to buy? There aren't that many springers in .25 are there?
-
I did order a Hatsan striker 1000x 25cal today. I shall have it tomorow.Nice little gun, 2900grams.

I finished tuning up my B30 this weekend and left it with open sights while I ran it over the Chrony. It was so accurate that I decided to try it out farther even with my bad right eye I was able to hit 1/2 inch off center @ 25 yards. Moved out to 30 and got 2 bulls and grouped 1 inch. Took a shot at my tablespoon spinner that is set out at 35 yards and got it to spin on the first shot. Now I am looking to find some replacement sights for it to get something nice like TrueGlow or something similar. Still going to scope it once I get the rail reattached.

As I've read about Paul's white paper trick for open sights on various forums, I get one of those "wish I had thought of that" moments.
As I grew through my airgun development with my HW30S, factory open sights (notch and blade) to Williams/Beeman peep, I also found that same trick really helped my ole' model '56 (year old) eyes to get the cheek weld in the right place for best groups.
One additional trick I also discovered.....
My groups were always better on the center bull of a '5 spot' target. ???
Seemed the natural eye centering to the brightest picture, was less accurate on the side bulls due to the darker borders beyond the target paper???
After some thought.... ::)
and a wine inspired 'Eureka'... ;)
I used a larger white backing paper to expand the sides of my targets white area, my groups for the side bulls matched the center bulls. MAGIC !!!
Maybe some of you have also seen this happen in your shooting.

Just an observation, the fiber optic sights are almost too big for precise shooting. I know when I spoke to Paul he said he couldn't use them at longer ranges because the end post is too big.
The RWS 350 has a very narrow front sight, which I didn't like at first. However once you get used to it, you can make precise shots.

I haven't shot with open sights in years! However, I was pretty pleased with how the 350 shot. This is was using my hand as a rest. Not sure what happened to one of them but I was pleased with the groups. My eyes have a hard time trying to focus, but after some practice I think I started getting it.

What was the range on that??
-
Just 12 yards, I'm going to push it out to 20 today weather permitting. You see there is this strange wet stuff that is falling from the sky here that hasn't fallen in a couple of months....:)
-
Not trying to be a SA but at 12 yards you should be able to put up a group like that with no sights ;)
-
shrug shooting freehand thats not that bad...

I love shooting open sights but I can't stand fiber optic sights because they look huge when I'm trying to nail a chipper at 10-15 yards. I really like shooting with open sights though. It's just too bad that scopes are so convienent LOL
-
Honestly, offhand I think the open sights are easier to shoot. Now when I have something to rest against, the scope wins hands down.

Oh for sure. Not knowing how much we all shake is a huge confidence booster LOL
