Title: If you miss a red try a gray
Post by: dk1677 on September 18, 2010, 09:06:54 PM
As I took my wife to work this morning I saw no less than 5 grays by the side of the road with in a 1/10 of a mile of my home so I was was on nutter watch as much as I could be. Finally around noon I see one headed in, I open my shootin' window and I see hes stopped to munch on that butternut that the last two have met their fate with. I load the Disco with a Kodiak and look back and hes gone off! Well sometimes they come back so I keep the Disco out and in about 10 minutes a Red comes over to the nut area! This was a surprise I have seen them running around pine trees way back in my yard but not up in the shootin' area since spring.  I take the shot but its high ( there was a can just behind his head that I use as a target , and it hit the top of it) I go out to be sure and I see that the gray had gotten the nut out of the center, all that's left was the husk, it's been around awhile now and was soft so the gray had an easy time getting the nut out. Around 3pm I saw this guy in my apple tree and picked up the Disco and a Kodiak, I couldn't get a good head shot but no problem with the Disco  ;D  Got a chest shot just behind the right shoulder and it exited out the left. He just dropped about 15ft to the ground on his back. It was about a 25+ yard shot (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb138/dk1677/100_2204.jpg)

Very nice shooting Dave!  Don't worry about that Red.  You 'll get him next time.  Just put more butternuts out or sunflower seeds :)

Are those pellet holes in the Danish Cookie tin?  I really like those cookies! :)

Geeze, I have the exact opposite problem. Reds drop like rocks, grays just get up and walk away.

Nice shooting. :)

Can I add that my first (and only) miss of yesterday was on a fox, one of the few I've seen, and the grey's were the ones I couldn't get a decent shot on. I have plenty of greys and reds under my belt but I have NEVER gotten a fox squirrel.
