Who here sorts pellets? Worth the trouble and scale expense?
-
The only time i sort pellets is when I'm shooting a match and i pick out the best shaped none deformed pellets.

it depends on the pellets I'm shooting or the gun I'm shooting and what I intend to shoot at? for example sometimes I get Crosman .22cal HP's that are so out of spec from the tin I'm using that they won't shoot consistantly from say my HW80, I know that that rifle likes the ,552 or .553 head sizes and some of the CPHP's in the tins can vary as much as 5 thousands of an inch per pellet so if I want consistant accuracy using those pellets I know I need those head sizes and I have to sort them to get them, :P

Sort by weight for field target and Bench Rest. Mmakes difference for me at long ranges. Was also sorting by rolling too for a split second. With head on left and skirt on right if it rolls leftleft skirt is wider than head. Not sure that really makes a difference though.
I do know that for a certain new barrel, I might have to measure head diameter as the pells seem to fit loose and either I am pulling the shot or every once in a while I get a flier - not nice to have fliers.
Weighting is a bit time consuming but I find the groups get beter with the extra effort.

Bob I feel the closer a pellet to pellet is, the greater your groups will be. I weigh and measure all my pellets and shot them one group at a time. I have found a .1 gr at 30yds will change your POI by 1/8" or so. I only shot paper so accuracy is my number one goal. It is time comsuming but worth it for me. I all so light lube them. Hope this helped you. Craig

What scale do you use? Like you, accuracy is all important for me, but don't want to spend much here. I already have good calipers. Is that what you use for measuring? Thanks guys.

Bob, I made this fixture to measure my pellets. It is easy to make and very accurate.

This is the scale I use. It has all different scales on it. Around $80. I can do a 500 tin in about 2hrs. Craig

Don't fool with it ... But do size the .177's threw an old beeman .1785" pellsizer. Kills velocity a tad but IMO consistency is better.
To each there own .... Potatoe Patatoe ... Tomato Tamatto :P

I'm guessing $80 is a starting point for a good grain scale. Mine has no point anything ie. 13.9 grs pellets register as just plain 14 on my cheap Digiweight $30 scale 13.4 is 12.

Got and other similar stories off the www;
I picked up one of the Nygord pellet sizers somewhere and found it useful for sorting pellets according to the degree of difficulty in sizing; usually two batches.
I also used it after testing and found it produced tighter groups with RWS Hobby pellets which I shot in my FWB 65 & 90 and made Master.
I sold it after talking with Don Nygord who told me he only made them to make money from guys who thought they worked. He said they did nothing to improve group sizes with match pellets.

For the crosman ultra mags 10.5gr. I use a digital caliper that reads like this , .1775 or .1785.
Very accurate then shoot the ones with the best velocity and accuracy.
Right now though the 350 has a steady diet of JSB heavies 10.3 gr and loves them....no sorting.

Only sorting i do is to weed out crosman and gamo pellets. Then shoot all my jsb , hn and beeman pellets. I did measure head size on the 3 brands listed to try to find out which pellets and weights were available and why beeman and hn 10.65 gr pelets shoot different speeds. The only thing i found was skirt diameter was .001 different on some. I havent bought a scale yet cause at cabelas they were $70 or more and im not going to a head shop to get one cheaper.

If you are looking for an inexpensive scale that gives repeatable 0.02grain resoulution...
i have found this one does very nicely for me:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DIGITAL-POCKET-BALANCE-DIAMOND-SCALE-20X0-001-GRAM-/180444390401?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0352e401 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/DIGITAL-POCKET-BALANCE-DIAMOND-SCALE-20X0-001-GRAM-/180444390401?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0352e401)
Negitives....shipping (free) took 2 weeks to the west coast.
....if you bump the scale platform, you probably need to power cycle (ie, off/on) to re-zero.
Positives....I've had very consistant and repeatable readings from a set of test pellets, ...
day to day and week to week..... weighing .177 pellets, in the 7.0 to 9.0 gr ranges.
----------
After messing around with weighing and and testing my accuracy, I have found that
after proving consistancy in different brands and specific types, ie hobby vs basic, that
I don't use the scale to pick 'match worthy' pellets...
I just decide which pellet to shoot for each GTA match and take 'em out of the tin
and straight into the breech.....and shoot 'em.
If I get a flyer....I might make a note on the target before submitting it.
...but I dont spend shootin' time weighin' ammo..
( many accuse me of OCD.... .but I know my limitations ) ::) to sort of steal a line from Clint Eastwood
