Title: Miminum Velocity/energy for Silhouette?
Post by: bowzette on February 01, 2012, 02:29:25 PM
Hi.  I'm new to the world of ARs.  I was interested in what the lower end of velocity and energy is to knock over rams at yds/meters with 177?

Depends on the size of the ram. You're gonna need a lot more power if you're after a full grown 200lb. one with a rack, the babies would be easier.  Just couldn't resist....but they do come in sizes and some will even work with BB guns, again, it depends on the size of the ram.

just got a CMP 853 10 meter rifle.  I didn't know if it could be "tweeked" to produce sufficient energy for silhouette or not and if so would it still be accurate? I think the muzzle velocity is around 475-500.  I thought the recognized silhouette matches had rams at 45 yards and were a standard size.

Go to ebay an google target silhouette. You can buy airgun size animal target. I don,t know the rules for match shooting. It would have to be very calm day for the 853 to be shooting at small targets at 45 yds.. There,s is a mod to get the 853 to 525-550 fps by fill the front of the pump cup. With my 853 I have a house fly stamp thats makes perfect size flys I shoot them at 25 yd,s a get more hits then misses. I think you want the 1/10 scale size targets.

+1 to spysir's comments, in calm weather, you'll knock down Rams all day if you (the shooter) are capable, your gun is fine as is, a little on the low power side, but fine.

thanks.  My question if I had the chance to shoot silhouette will I need a different AR?  Sounds like if it isn't too windy and I'm not too serious the 853 may get by.  Of course there is alway the opportunity for another gun!

I ,m looking for some targets also . Steelplinker has a set of 20 3/16 thick for 57.00 . An a guy on ebay has set of 20 that are 1/8 thick. With your lower power gun the 1/8 thick target would be easier to knock over. The 3/16 ones would hold up to higher power gun. Just a thought I think there 45.00 for the set

"I think you want the 1/10 scale size targets."
What he said. From a link sent to my post on Silhouette you can get a set of 4 from steelplinker for a little over 12 bucks. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of them produced, outside of steelplinker the ebay ones you mentioned were the only other airgun sized knock-over silhouettes I've seen online.
Probably a nono, but I'd like to shoot bb's at them, so thin, cheap, and light would work, something too heavy would stay standing with the bb coming back at me - DOH!

Hey "Gunga"

Physics 101, Steel BB comes back at you BEFORE the target falls over, wear your glasses and warn your neighbors!

The daisy powerline 201 I bought online(still hasn't arrived) shoots pellets too, plus it's pretty weak, but my friends Smith and Wesson MP shoots bb's only at 480fps, guess he should stick to tin cans and paper targets with that.
