Title: 1st Refinish Job - Storm XT
Post by: Airik on January 24, 2012, 12:42:10 PM

(This will take 2 posts because of phone's max character allowance.)

Well, folks, I just did my first refinishing job on any woodwork ever (even at the age of 34, ha). The guinea pig was the Crosman Storm XT.

I used Zip-Strip on it about 3 times to get the worst of the finish off, each time wiping off with a terry cloth rag.

Next - sanding sanding and more sanding. Started with 80 and finished with 220 and steel wool. Wood block was used where I could, to keep flat surfaces.

I also wet sanded it too at the end after a warm rinse in the shower to remove the 'hairs.'

I let it dry 24 hrs, then wiped it with mineral spirits w/ 00 steel wool. Let dry 24 hrs.

2 coats of Minwax Natural 209 oil based stain w/ foam brush, wiping each coat after 15 min. Let dry 24 hrs.

I didn't sand before I put about 15 thin coats of spray can Minwax gloss (don't shake GLOSS) poly on it in a matter of 12 hrs.

Looks good. Camera on phone is broke - sorry guys - no pics.

Absolutely not the most professional job. I could've let the poly dry after a few coats & after 24 hrs, 800 grit between some coats, but I really didn't care. The final finish is kind of like how new cars' paint jobs are nowadays - not completely flat, if you know what I mean.

I'm happy with my even-sanding job though - very important to have wood sanded in all areas w/ same grit, or I hear it'll be blotchy.

I'll put gun together at least after 72 hrs, & in a month, rubbing compound & auto wax.
