Title: Leupold opinion
Post by: s10gto on January 12, 2012, 12:30:08 PM
My HW 97K needs new glass. I have read all Leupolds will handle a springer. Is this true? Of course the 97 is no magnum so I feel it will be just fine ,but what do you think?

Looking at this one so far.

Thanks   ;D      Dustin

It will "probably" be fine. Go for it, and keep us posted on how it  performs and holds up.

You can email Leupold and ask. I did awhile back and they replied that all of their scopes could handle a springer. The scope though  probably has the parallax adjusted to 100 yards or more. You  couldprobably have their custom shop adjust the parallax to 30 yards or so and it would be good for most air gun ranges. I read on another post where people are doing that and it only cost about 10 dollars more. Or do what I have always done on my rimfires get a 3-9 x 33 EFR with a AO..They work good on a Rimfire and I am going to put one on my Rainstorm when I get it.Another great thing about Leupold is their lifetime gurantee. I had a pair of their 10x42 windriver binocs  for at least 6 years and was rough with them had them out in severe conditions, well they was not focusing right a few weeks ago so I sent them back. Leupold sent me a Brand New pair of 10x 42 Mojaves ,Free ,since the Wind River series is no longer made. Best buy quality. Mark

Dustin Leupold makes a very fine scope and most of them can be used on Airguns. A  couple of the things you should be looking for in an airgun scope are:
1 - An adjustable objective lens or a side focus is almost a must, as most scopes that do not have them have a set focus for 50 or 100 yards. Shooting at closer distances will be out of focus. IMO I prefer the side focus as it is much easier to use by not having to reach all the way to the front of the scope to turn the focus dial.
2 - a Mil Dot reticle is also almost a must. With a Mil Dot reticle you can sight in your AG at whatever range you want, 20 or 30 yards normally works out very well depending on what distances you plan on shooting. So let's say you sight in at 30 yards and you see something you want to shot at 40 or 50 yards all you need to do is select the Mil Dot you know will be correct for that distance (you will know this from having practice from different distances) and you should hit the spot the Mil Dot was on. Without  the Mil Dot retilce you will just be guessing how much to hold the cross hair above the spot you want to hit. If you are only going to shot at one distance Mil Dot reticles are not needed.

Leapers, Hawk and Centerpoint are 3 of the many good AG scopes that are out there and yes Leupold does have some scopes with the 2 items I mentioned that are almost a must.

I guess I'm with Norm on this, The side focus is a real benefit to the AG hunter/paper puncher as are the mildots.the Leupolds are really at the top of the pile, but do you need to spend that much $$$ on a scope that will be used at 20-50 yard distances and doesn't have those features. There are some really great scopes available for less than $150 which are quite clear, offer side focus and have exceptional light gathering qualities. A Leupold with those features would put the cost through the roof.  I would opt for one of those less expensive ones, and a new AG to put it on!   ;)

Thanks everyone! Great help! I have read that you can have Leupold adjust the parallax and you can have choice of reticle.  I have the Leupold EFR. Great scope with (IMHO) unmatched quality. I also want the beautiful finish to go with the 97k.  ;D

Thanks again

My 6.5x20 EFR held up to 10,000+ shots on the TX200 just fine.
So will the Burris 8x32

Leupold EFRs are the springer rated Leupolds. They say that the other scopes will not have a problem... but why chance it?
