Title: Gamo Big Cat Vs Targets
Post by: Random Plinker on January 08, 2012, 11:34:13 PM
This Cat is overdue for a review.  It came home shortly after the November auction, and just before the holidays were in full swing.  Gene's tune and the Charlie trigger showed promise.  This “light weight hunter” cocked easily and shot with smooth authority after a very crisp light trigger break.  No diesel explosions or supersonic pellets.   Just the sweet perfume of spring rifle after burner in the air.  I don't think they come from the Gamo factory like this.  The factory 4x32 scope is not AO, so is a bit fuzzy close up; however it was surprisingly bright and clear at appropriate distances.  It was already zeroed nicely upon mounting (thanks Gene!), so I blasted away with CPL's in between holiday activities to break her in.

Santa brought me a Leapers 3-9x32 AO Golden Image scope and UTG medium rings.  In addition to lucky, I must have been good last year.  I happened to have plenty of prototype 50 feet rifle targets floating around this weekend, and the weather was outstanding.  The four and three plus one shot groups on the top two bulls on the right show what the rifle can do if the shooter does their part.  The rest, well, I'm not Random Plinker for nothing!

I finished up the afternoon with my B26 from MM for comparison.  It was close, but the B26 out shot the Cat by a narrow margin.  That's saying a lot for the Big Cat.  The B26 is heavier, very slightly lower in power judging from the duct seal holes and has more glass.  This Cat's a keeper for grab and go walks in the woods.  Nutters beware!

Thanks to GTA for the great tune (Gene), great trigger (Bob), great shooter (Lizzie) and magnanimous members (Smackey54).

Looks like you could be the one to beat if you do the 50 feet Casual Rifle match.  Yep...those Big Cat's are pretty decent.

You bet I'll be there for the 50 feet match!  I beg to differ on one to beat though.  Did you see Mr. "gun on bag, me wedged between dryer and beer fridge" 's target?

In the bag, wedged between dryer and empty beer fridge, I suspect aack73 would still make the rest of us work to give him some friendly competition!

@aack73:  Rules are rules.  Anything goes in this match.  If the rest of us aren't using a bag, or encouraging you to empty your fridge to our advantage (yeah, that was a low blow - sorry), we ain't trying hard enough!  On a serious note, your groups were inspiring.  My vote is keep inspiring us!

I'm already thinking about my back yard possibilities.  Sitting, wedged against a pine tree.  Prone, on a yoga mat, in the woods behind the house (Shhhhhh!  I'll brush the leaves off before it comes back in the house-I don't think I'll get caught borrowing it).  And if all else fails, I'm hanging up the springers and unleashing my scoped QB78D!  Lots of possibilities.  Should be a fun shoot.
