Title: Refinished Titan Stock ---My First
Post by: Petey on January 07, 2012, 08:25:43 PM
I finally  did it!  Simply could not stand looking at that Baby Poo brown Stock . EH!  :o
So off it went and into work shop .
This one is my first stock refinish. Wanted to give it an aged look.  Did some homework online and went with it. The finish came out smooth as silk after Loads of sanding... Learned a bunch too.
So here it is . Hope ya Like it as much as do.

Hey Eric,
I put in about sixteen hours.
Someone else sent me a PM asking how... so I'll take this opportunity to share it.

Striping and re-contouring the stock only about two hours. A palm sander and 150 grit go quick.
I stained the stock using a water based stain. Re-sanded  to take off the raised grain . Then stained three more times to build depth in different areas.
Then sand with 220 to till the grain barely  shows through.
I hit some of the bare areas with black stain ,let it dry then sand it off and re-stain with green.  Although it may not show in the pics this gave the bare areas a worn look as some of the stain will stay in the grain.
I then made a mental note of where my hands would be if holding the AG and sanded that area till i got the desired result. Take your time here . I used 330 grit and just let the paper float on the surface. Do not bear down on it.

The finish is Minwax Water based Poly (Satin).  I Highly recommend avoiding this particular product.  Due to it being a water based product it dries at rate that makes it nearly impossible to work with.
The plus side is - you can sand and re coat in 90 minutes.
I used 330 grit prior to re-coat and for the finish sanding.
Don't worry about brush marks or runs......let it go.  You will sand it out before the next coat. (use 330..directions state 220= cuts too deep no matter how light the touch) Save your worn sand paper for the finish. There will be areas you will want to only "Kiss" with paper and this is the perfect stuff.
 A little tip>>>>.
The fastest way to do this is too "Take your time".

Sand all the Gloss , drips and runs away for a nice Satin finish and enjoy the results.

Cool finish.  I too hated that baby poo brown.  It seems like pretty good wood
to cover with such an ugly finish.

I found a tin and a half of those exact super pells in a box of some old stuff I had.
It was 2 but I shot a bunch and they were not accurate at all in the Titan.

They worked OK in the old Crosman 1400 I have but it is in need of repair at the moment.

I actually never shot the old Super Pells. I kinda threw that one in as a bonus pic.

hmm after seeing this and the emerald green someone did on a benji discovery stock... i'm tempted to 1st get one of those air rifles, then sand it and restain it, because these green wood stocks are looking mighty nice compared to that weird brown they come in.
