Title: Shot the Gargoyle by Dan today
Post by: melloroadman on December 14, 2011, 06:10:26 PM
Chronyed the rifle in doors due to weather . First time I have had it tethered so I wanted to see were it needed to be . Be fore I tested it more for accuracy .  I have the low pressure valve in the rifle .It was tethered and regulated to 2400 psi. I do remember that the 142, 189, and the 224 grain bullets were accurate at 50 yards sized at .452 and 15 bhn lead . Never shot the others very much . I did run a telescoping gage down the barrel and came up with .453 . Sized some bullets to .454 that are to heavy for the LPV. They did chamber but harder than I like if it is not needed . Had two .452 sizers so I honed one out to .453 last night and tried a couple of bullets . They chamber  very well . Will have to cast some more bullets and try them in both .453 and .454 and see what happens with the accuracy . As well as the .452 I have.  Used .452 and 15 bhn today for the chrony testing .Marvin

Tried a shorter spring in the rifle . To make it easier on me when I shoot 100-200 shoots at a time . Lost about 30-40 fps but sure made it easy to cock . And dropped the psi to 2100 psi tethered and regulated again with the LPV . At full power the rifle will produce 645 fpe. But this should still hunt something and it works good on paper for now.Marvin

Tethered and regulated to 2100 psi. , bi pod on table . 142 grain 15 bhn bullets . 50 yard target . Bullets sized to .452, .453, and .454 . All 3 did very well . But there is resistance on loading the .454 so they will not be used with this bullet again . The .452 were a very close second to the .453 which would place the first 3 shots touching each others and blowing out the bulls eye every time  if I did my part . Started with a 80 cf scuba tank filled to 3100 psi . Shot 120 shots and had 2300 psi left in the tank with the bullets doing 908 fps . Marvin

Tethered and regulated to 2100 psi. , bi pod on table target at 50 yards. 165 grain bullets this time out of the Lee mold the 142 grains were out of my .455 accurate mold . Bullets were cast with 15 bhn reclaimed lead again. And sized to .452, .453, and .454 . 80 cf scuba tank had 3100 psi at start and after 120 shots had 2300 psi left . Bullets were at 875 fps.
The .452 gave me a 8 inch 10 shot group . The .453 gave me a 6 inch 10 shot group and the .454 gave me a 3 1/2 inch 10 shot group . Then I loaded the .454 backwards and the first 3 shots were touching each others and no more bulls eye . This was repeated many times . As often as I could do my part . Marvin

Marvin what kind of gun is this Gargoyle. Is it from a dealer or is it a custom job? I have never heard of or seen such a gun. I see that it has immense power. Now my 909 seems like a Red Ryder by comparison. Can't believe that power just from AIR :o

My Gargoyle was made by Dan who makes the XP air rifles now . Mine was the last one or next to last one he made . It has a lot of the internals of the XP ranger in it and will produce 645 fpe when filled to 4000 psi and the HPV installed . Just about a match in power for the XP up to 4000 psi . But the Rangers power levels are much easier to change . I have to remove the air tube and change valves were as the Ranger it can be done by removing the stock and adjusting the bolts on the hammer . And then the ranger can be filled to 4500psi as well as changing calibers with a top end change . Marvin

Rifle was tethered and regulated to 2100 psi . Short spring and LPV. Bi pod on table 50 yard target . Used the 175 grain bullets out of the accurate mold with 15 bhn lead sized to .453. Chronyed at 858 fps and 286 fpe . 3 shot strings would place the bullets touching each others as long as I did my part . Marvin

Marvin:

It is nice to know that a Wadcutter can be accurate out to 50 yards.
Thank you for the report.

Paul if you stop and think about it they are one of the most balanced bullets around . Here is a article about them and why the SWC came about . The reasons for it are mostly excluded for AR and the small about of different in sub sonic and out to 100 yards BC that most of our target and hunting is done with in makes them a good choice of bullet IMO .Marvin

Rifle was tethered and regulated to 2100 psi . Short spring and LPV. Bi pod on table 50 yard target . Bullets were 15 bhn out of the Lee 452-228 1R mold . Sized at .452 they were wild . At .453 they would do a 3 shot group at about 2.5 inches . The mold was dropping the bullets at .4535 -.454 so I used them un- sized and they would group all 3 shots touching . And they did this loaded forward or backwards as a BTWC. Were going out at 789 fps and 313 fpe . Marvin
