In my opinion the GX brand compressors ( https://gxpumpofficial.com ) are the best for a small user.  The company produces many models and choosing one to fit your specific needs could not be easier.  I have purchased directly from the GX website and know there are many different outfits where some of these compressors can be had.  Take a look at the offerings, shop around, read some reviews and then throw your hat into the ring.

I will second the GX (both bought from their website).  I first bought the battery powered model that uses a Makita 18v battery (GX E L2).  I bought it so I wouldn’t have to haul my tank around and just fill the rifle directly.  I was impressed and bought a GX CS4i.  I use it to fill my rifles directly.  I don’t use a tank anymore.  I can top my rifles off in a couple minutes and the pump doesn’t even get warm.

The GX compressors are a little cheaper from their website but if you buy them from Amazon, you can get a four year warranty as opposed to the one year warranty from GX.

Something else to share about the GX compressors is that TargetForge ( https://targetforge.net ) handles many of the parts and supplies one might need to care for this brand of compressor.  Bill is a good guy and has answered my many questions when contacted via email.

My vote it the same, look hard at GX.

I have had a Yong Heng for 4 years now, I think, and it works well filling my 45 minute Scott bottle.  But it is noisy and the water it requires takes up some space.  It gets pretty hot too.  I've added radiators so it stays below 60 C not without ice in the water but it still gets hot.

More recently I bought a GX CS2.  I wanted a backup and something more portable.  It only weighs about 15 lbs.  It comes with battery clamps you can you on your vehicle battery and a 120 to 12V power supply that you hook up to using the same battery clamps.  No auto shutoff but I don't trust them anyway.  $250 delivered to my house.  I wanted the option to use 18V Milwaukee tool batteries so I bought a 18 to 12V step down converter and battery dock for about $20 from Amazon and now I have that option too.  The tool batteries give me around 6 gun fills easily.  The CS2 is significantly quieter and my better suited to use inside my house.

The CS3 seems like it is the same compressor with more features and a larger case.  The CS4 is quite different with a bigger motor (350W versus 250W) and water cooling.  It is rated to fill my bottle.  It would be much slower than my 1500W Yong Heng but I think it would do it.  The CS5 comes in both a single piston and a dual piston design and can fill bigger bottles.  Your $600 budget would get you a CS4.  They get significantly more for the CS4 with the 120-12 V power supply inside the case last time I looked.  The one with the power supply separately might be as much as $100 less.  I don't think there is a functional difference.  Just packaging.

My handpump has just died, so this is thread is timely. The GX CS2 looks good to me - thanks to those posters.
Question is, I use my rifles occasionally, so do I need a filter as well?

Are you asking about those in-line filters used to remove moisture from the compressed air?  If so, I say yes.  Even when using a hand pump I had an in-line filter on the fill whip.  Now that I am running a GX CS-1 my fill whip has three in-line filters configured in something of a daisy chain.  This does increase the fill time but there has been no signs of moisture in any of my PCPs when inspected.  YMMV

I tried to repair my Chinese pump, replaced seals, cleaned its internals and still doesn't pump. So I ordered the GX sc2 - $310 without the water filter. At my age, pumping my 3 PCP's by hand is too exhausting.

My CS2 came with two absorbent filters.  The very small one was installed on the metal block where the gauge is.  I think it is obviously too small to depend on.  They also included a much larger absorbent filter, however, and it only took a few minutes to screw into the same block.  I took out the tiny one when I put the bigger one on.  But you could use both and use the little one to catch oil so it doesn't contaminate the bigger one.  To me, the bigger absorbent filter seems like the minimum.  But I went ahead and bought the GX filter when it came out and now I use that too.  I think it is overkill for the little CS2 and it almost doubles gun fill times I am confident of getting dry air.  A less expensive option would be to add a small filter with dessicant.  That is what I do on my Yong Heng and it seems to do the job.  I do not see water in my guns when I open them.

If you decide to purchase direct from GX Pumps, don't forget their 10% off discount code:  GX10OFF!  Also, when purchasing direct, they don't charge sales tax in most states!
