Yeah, someone posted it on the forum when the story first hit the news.  Follow up reports indicated that there was more to the story than the news originally reported.  Apparently there had been  ongoing problems between this man and his neighbors for quite some time concerning his activities in the neighborhood and this incident was the straw that broke the camels back.  I doubt anyone will ever get the full story regarding this incident but  I felt bad for the elderly gentleman.

I have seen this old man that got jail time on TV.  It's a show called "Rescue Inc." about a few civilians/volunteers in Long Island that go after people that abuse animals, or rescue the ones that are neglected.
On one of the episodes a few months ago, they got called by the old man's next door neighbor (a woman) would had video taped him several times drowing and killing many critters that were game animals or illegal to shoot (like doves, and other birds).  He would also step on the birds' head and you could hear the "crack" in the video.
I am not sure how he got charged with cruelty to animals by shooting a squirrel with a pellet gun.  I would think he 'd be charged with shooting it out of season or some other offense, but then they said there are other pending charges against him, so it could be DEC/DNR charges.  How can shooting a tree rat be cruel, is beyond me.  Unless he had to shoot it several times with an underpowered airgun, so they are claiming it suffered.  It sounds to me like the judge was a tree hugger as well, not just his neighbors.

This happened in my state, so more reason for me to find some good hunting grounds and get my butt out there :)  But there is so much game in my backyard, that I 'm not too motivated to do that yet  :D

I'm with Jeff on this one.
It definitely sounds like your typical news media, sloppy reporting and not putting it into its full context.
I seriously doubt he is getting charged merely for shooting a squirrel, however many tree huggers there may be there.
Squirrel hunting is still legal in those parts, and maybe there is an ordinance against shooting even airguns in town.
It sounds as if he has been harrassing his neighbors.
Maybe the squirrel was out of season.
*(&^, maybe he wounded it, then threw it at the neighbors for all we know.
Hate to say it, but I don't believe a thing the so called media say anymore.
They have lost my faith, and I will only believe multiple sources, with both sides getting their story when it comes to just about any story I read.
Too many lazy reporters, too many editors who don't ride herd on those reporters, and too many newsrooms dominated by "unbiased journalists" with an agenda.

It is really hard to understand why the old man was arrested, without knowing the whole story with all the details. Maybe there is a law against shooting one in town? Or maybe, since the air guns have been finally categorized as legal hunting weapon, they cannot be used in the dwelling areas within less than 500 feet? Maybe it's off the season? Still putting the 80 year old man in jail for killing a squirrel and talking about animal abuse is PATHETIC.

He was warned 12 times and was shooting critters in traps that's not fair game i read the story and he seams like a man who didn't care about his surrounding . Remember guys he was on his property yes but not in the woods and saying you will shoot at someones home put kids in danger  . If he said that to me or my nieghbor i would hand him his @$$ while walking right through his shots . He had no respect for guns or others here and deserved what he got for not being reponseable  for his action JMO comming from a man who shoots everything in season but dogs, birds of pry and songbirds which there is no season for obvious reasons.PS northport has it's own cops and laws i know i live in the next town over and know where his house is it's by no means a safe shooting area and very close to a busy road . If you have a soft spot for him would you let him aim at your house please let me know if that would fly in your hood

Yep, just as I suspected, as long as the information that TheKnot provides is accurate, and I have all the reasons to think so.
Irresponsible old geezer threatening neighbors and making a general @$$ of himself.

Interesting how all those caring squirrel=lovers have absolutely no respect for private property (or the truth if you read some of their threads).

Example of the property issue...

http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showpost.php?p=324539&postcount=12 (http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showpost.php?p=324539&postcount=12)

I never hear about airgunners (or other hunters, for that matter) taking other folks game off their property. Funny that.

:/
